Atlético de Madrid has teamed up with businessman José Luis López ‘El Turronero’ to develop the commercial Ciudad del Deporte area around its Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

CincoDias said Atlético and the property developer will invest at least €80 million in a mixed-use shopping, supermarket and leisure area.

Atlético de Madrid, or simply Atlético, is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid (Spain) that plays in LaLiga (the top professional men’s football league in Spain). The club play their home games at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano which has a capacity to accommodate 70,460 spectators.

Atlético de Madrid and El Turronero will develop the commercial area of the Ciudad del Deporte next to the Metropolitano stadium, in the San Blas-Canillejas neighborhood.

The well-known businessman from Ubrique and the club will launch this large commercial area, “one of the most important in Europe”, through a company called Nasas Madrid.

The complex will include a bowling alley, cinemas, supermarket, children’s area, shops affiliated to large international firms and a wide range of restaurants, among many other attractions.

The partners in the venture have already begun marketing the space, which has garnered a lot of interest among well-known brands in the retail sector.

The overall Ciudad del Deporte del Atlético de Madrid covers several plots, with a surface area of one million square metres, including green areas, which will house football pitches, multi-sport and padel tennis courts, an athletics track, a mini-stadium with capacity for around 6,000 spectators, training fields and a high-performance centre.

In addition, Atlético is considering other options for use of areas within this space such as an artificial beach with waves, a surf pool and even a golf course.

The total cost of the investment for the development of the entire complex will exceed €350 million, financed through the club’s own funds and collaborations with partners such as El Turronero.

The Atlético de Madrid Sports City project was presented in July 2022 by the team’s president, Enrique Cerezo, and its CEO, Miguel Ángel Gil, as “a dream” that will change “the history” of the club.

José Luis López made his fortune in the real estate sector, the main activity along with textiles of the conglomerate of companies he owns, which include interests in the energy and insurance sectors.

In Andalusia, the ‘friend of celebrities’ is involved in the Entrenasas shopping centre project (Dos Hermanas, Seville), which is due to open next September, and has another major project underway in Marbella, which will soon be joined by two others he has in mind in Malaga.

José Luis López also presides over the López Mariscal 2015 Foundation, which, in addition to providing support to vulnerable families, carries out cultural activities and promotes talent in Andalusia.
