NEOM ski resort update Image: Bechtel and NEOM

Saudi Arabia’s NEOM has appointed US consultants Bechtel as Project Manager for the TROJENA ski resort.

‘ArabianBusiness’ stated that the ambitious TROJENA ski resort is in the heart of the $500bn mega project NEOM’s mountain region and 50 km from the Gulf of Aqaba coast.

NEOM’s TROJENA will be an outdoor ski resort in NEOM, Saudi Arabia. And the mega project will be the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC’s) first outdoor ski resort with a man-made lake.

NEOM is a Saudi City being built in Tabuk Province in Northwestern Saudi Arabia. It is planned to incorporate Smart City technologies and function as a tourist destination. The site is North of the Red Sea, East of Egypt across the Gulf of Aqaba, and South of Jordan.

The Bechtel Corporation is an American engineering, procurement, construction, and project management company founded in San Francisco, California, US, and headquartered in Reston, Virginia. As of 2022, the Engineering News-Record ranked Bechtel as the second largest construction company in the United States.

Bechtel is a trusted engineering, construction and project management partner to the industry and Government.

‘ArabianBusiness’ further stated that the ski resort will spread across 1,400 sq km and have elevations ranging from 1,500m to 2,600m.

57 sq km will be dedicated to the main development, which will benefit from the unique mountain climate in the region, where temperatures drop below zero during Winter.

TROJENA will offer the Gulf’s first outdoor ski experience and host the 2029 Asian Winter Games.

The 2029 Asian Winter Games, officially known as the IX Asian Winter Games and commonly known as TROJENA 2029, will be the ninth edition of the Asian Winter Games, a pan-Asian Winter multisport event to be held in TROJENA of NEOM, Saudi Arabia.

TROJENA is a key development that will contribute to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals of growing tourism and diversifying its economy away from hydrocarbons.

Bechtel will provide services including technical, commercial and construction management for the development of TROJENA and supporting NEOM’s ambitions for sustainability.

Averred Jake Mumm, Bechtel’s Regional Managing Director for Infrastructure, “NEOM is without question the most ambitious project in living memory, and we are proud to expand our role to support the TROJENA project. From a construction perspective, NEOM offers once-in-a-lifetime career opportunities for Saudi nationals, who will be helping to open the world’s eyes to the Kingdom’s outstanding natural beauty alongside futuristic technology.”

Commenting on the bid award, Philip Gullett, Executive Director of TROJENA, said, “NEOM and TROJENA continue to attract international firms as collaborators of a new future where people can live, work and play in harmony with nature. Our vision defies current industry practices and lays the foundation of what sustainable regional and tourist developments can be. It is inspiring to witness how the world’s leading minds are coming together to redefine sustainability while maintaining a bespoke development that adapts to the surroundings and exceeds visitors’ expectations. Tourists will be able to experience all this at TROJENA, a destination unlike any other on earth.”
