The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) (UK) announced on March 28th its new in-ground experience Sight Screen Cinema – a unique outdoor cinema screening taking place at one of the world’s most historic sports grounds.

As part of Sight Screen Cinema, the Bollywood flick ‘83’ will be screened at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, UK.

‘Lord’s Cricket Ground’ stated that Lord’s has been playing host to cricket for over 200 years but this new venture will see MCC open up the Ground for the general public to experience the ‘Home of Cricket’ in an entirely different way.

The Marylebone Cricket Club is a cricket club founded in 1787 and based since 1814 at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, which it owns, in St John’s Wood, London (UK). The club was formerly the governing body of cricket retaining considerable global influence.

The 31,100-capacity Lord’s Cricket Ground, commonly known as Lord’s, is a cricket venue in St John’s Wood, London (UK). Named after its founder, Thomas Lord, it is owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and is the home of the Middlesex County Cricket Club, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the European Cricket Council (ECC) and, until August 2005, the International Cricket Council (ICC). Lord’s is widely referred to as the ‘Home of Cricket’ and is home to the world’s oldest sporting museum.

The Middlesex County Cricket Club is one of 18 first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Middlesex which has effectively been subsumed within the ceremonial county of Greater London.

The England and Wales Cricket Board is the national governing body of cricket in England and Wales. It was formed on January 1st, 1997 as a single governing body to combine the roles formerly fulfilled by the Test and County Cricket Board, the National Cricket Association and the Cricket Council.

The European Cricket Council (ECC) is an international body which oversaw cricket in European countries other than the Test-playing cricketing nation of England, the only European Full Member of the ICC for the duration of the ECC’s existence.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the global governing body of cricket. It was founded as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909 by representatives from Australia, England and South Africa. It was renamed as the International Cricket Conference in 1965, and took up its current name in 1987.

The first year of Sight Screen Cinema is set to see 8,000 people watching the Bollywood hit ‘83’, over one weekend in July, 40 years after the historic match was played at Lord’s. The film is a fascinating biopic following the inspiring story behind India’s victory in the 1983 World Cup, led by the talismanic Kapil Dev. Much of the filming took place on location at Lord’s in the Summer of 2019.

Cinemagoers will be able to immerse themselves in the film by watching from special areas on the outfield on the Main Ground, where much of the action actually took place. The film will be shown on the two state-of-the-art LED screens attached to the recently redeveloped Compton and Edrich stands at the Nursery End of the Ground, with picnic blanket or bean bag seating on the turf.

Directed by Kabir Khan, the film has won several awards for its sound and cinematography and lead actor Ranveer Singh, who plays Kapil Dev, was nominated for Best Actor in the Critics’ Choice Film Awards in India.

Commented Andy Muggleton, MCC’s Commercial Director, “There is a real wish within MCC to welcome more people to Lord’s and open up the Ground to those who might not ordinarily come here. We’re very excited to launch this new venture that brings together film and sport fans for a truly immersive and unforgettable experience in our historic Ground.”

Added Kabir Khan, Director of ‘83’, “Watching the final of the 1983 cricket World Cup as a young school boy, I could never have imagined that more than three and a half decades later I would be recreating that iconic match in the hallowed grounds of Lord’s. It was one of the most exciting moments in my filming career and now, in the year of the 40th anniversary of India’s historic win, we are getting to screen our film, ‘83’ on the Lord’s turf. I cannot wait to experience the excitement of our film at the Mecca of Cricket.”

‘Lord’s Cricket Ground’ further stated that join the Lord’s Cricket Ground for the very first Sight Screen Cinema. This is the chance to experience Lord’s as never before as one sit on the hallowed turf to relive one of the most memorable moments in cricket history with our on-field open-air screening of Bollywood blockbuster ‘83’. This is an opportunity for an unforgettable experience one won’t be able to find anywhere else.

Whether one is a die-hard cricket fan or simply a lover of film, one will love the experience of watching ‘83’ on one of Lord’s massive state-of-the-art LED screens in a truly special setting.

Forty years on, Lord’s is celebrating this triumph by opening its gates to give cricket buffs the unique opportunity to watch ‘83’ whilst sitting on the same pitch where history was made. One will be able to take one’s place on the outfield, surrounded by the Home of Cricket, the perfect backdrop to relive the moment when India lifted the Prudential trophy on Lord’s pavilion balcony. One can also get up close to the trophy raised by Kapil Dev on that famous day, which is housed at Lord’s.

One can choose to enjoy the special surroundings by sitting directly on Lord’s hallowed turf with a picnic blanket one has brought from home or purchased from one of Lord’s shops.
