Bruno Rodriguez Escobedo who is serving as the Urban Designer with Populous, US, says that the celebrated design firm just does not design buildings but “how we grow people together”.

Rodriguez stated that Populous develops the smartest venues drawing people together at work and play.

Bruno Rodriguez Escobedo is an architect with a Master of Urban Design from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (US). He brings a strong foundation in architectural design specializing in sports and urban-scale projects. In Populous, Escobedo is part of an internal think tank focused on researching and innovating trends in sports and entertainment venues.

In a talk with ‘Coliseum’, Bruno Rodriguez Escobedo, Urban Designer, Populous, US, narrates how they design dynamic entertainment and sports districts and how the architecture firm believes in creating experience for the fans and for the owners. As he puts in, “We design flexible public spaces and we do so not only thinking about the gameday but also provide space for people who need to interact on a Monday morning.” He also presents a case study on Truist Park in Georgia which is one of Populous’ oeuvres which oozes dynamism.

Populous

Populous is a global architectural and design practice with regional headquarters in Kansas City (US), London (UK) and Brisbane (Australia) specializing in sports facilities, arenas and convention centers as well as in the planning and design of major special events.

Bruno Rodriguez Escobedo started off by stating, “We design the places where people love to be together. Innovation is the cornerstone of how we draw people together and create a better-built tomorrow. We just do not design stadiums but we get involved with the games per se like the Super Bowl and the Olympic Games.”

He further stated that at Populous they believe that design is a global language with a local nuance – “Our principles are oriented on the user experience. We are also focused on the space design – the way we design the bowl, the way we design the stadium, the location. It is not just about random ideas and it is not just about the stadium itself but the experience around it.”

Sustainability weighs high on Populous’ scheme of things and “we have urban design principles which are related to the most current and most relevant urban design strategies”.

Case Study

Truist Park

The 41,084-capacity Truist Park is a baseball stadium in the Atlanta Metropolitan area in Georgia, United States. Opened in 2017, it is the ballpark of Major League Baseball’s (MLB’s) Atlanta Braves.

The Truist Park is the perfect blend of a classic ballpark feel, modern amenities and heightened hospitality which creates a fan experience unlike any other. An intimate setting of 41,000 seats is designed to maximize sightlines making every seat feel like the best in the house.

The Truist Park forms the centerpiece of the wider Battery Atlanta development, a new neighborhood 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta. It’s a destination in itself with 60 bars, restaurants, shopping precincts, hotels, and a 3,600-seat concert hall. Populous worked closely with the master planners of the development to ensure that the ballpark would integrate seamlessly with the buildings surrounding it creating a fan experience that has never been seen in baseball before.

Explained Escobedo, “It is a pretty diverse neighborhood and residential and we have a secondary venue which is a non-concert venue. We have a ballpark which is like the icon and it is pretty diverse too. But, again, the uses go back to activities and we have a series of activities.”

Talking about the design he stated, “The ballpark has been designed to maximize regional presence and we have created a relevant and important icon that is accessible from the highway.”

The designer further informed that they create spaces where “people can move around freely and where conversations can take place”.

Escobedo averred that in Truist Park they have created a modern-day Agora configuring and programing multilevel indoor and outdoor spaces. They have also brought all activities together in the ballpark like housing, retail, live music, entertainment, etc.

Wrap-up

Populous has scripted several success design stories and the Truist Park is one which stands out – “It is a really successful district for the development. In 2022, this development received 10 million visitors which is a pretty impressive figure. This place is super diverse raking in handsome revenue. Throughout the New Year (2024) the venue received 3.2 million visitors and the district received 7.3 million. The people that come here don’t come to buy something. They come and spend a good amount of time and money. The Truist Park, home to the Atlanta Braves, is complemented by the battery, an entertainment district that draws nearly three times as many visitors as the games themselves.”

The Truist Park has set the bar for hospitality and for the next generation of MLB ballparks. And Populous being associated with the entire development has proved to be the cherry on the cake.
