Cleveland Browns increased efforts to relocate to new stadium Image: Cleveland Browns and HKS

New developments are being tracked in the National Football League (NFL) team Cleveland Browns’ plan to move to an enclosed stadium in Brook Park in Ohio, US.

‘FOX 8’ stated that the Attorneys for the Browns filed a motion in the Federal court asking a judge to set a case management conference.

The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio, US. The Browns compete in the National Football League as a member of the American Football Conference North Division.

The 67,431-capacity Huntington Bank Field is a stadium in Cleveland, Ohio. Primarily for American football it is the home field of the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL) and serves as a venue for other events such as college and high school football, soccer, hockey, and concerts.

‘FOX 8’ further stated that the motion stated, “The plaintiff accordingly requests that the court set the Case Management Conference at its earliest convenience so that the ‘order containing the Case Management Plan governing the litigation’ may be promptly issued and litigation proceed on the ordered schedule. Significant further delay to the setting of the case schedule risks leaving the plaintiff without the ability to obtain effective judicial relief. The plaintiff brought this lawsuit to enforce and clarify its right to occupy a new stadium after its current stadium lease expires in February 2029 and construction must begin on a new stadium by early 2026 to be ready by 2029.”

The judge has not yet ruled on the motion.

The team is also seeking help from the State for funding for the project.

It appears some State lawmakers are in favor of the Browns project. A proposed amendment has been drafted in the House that would provide $600 million to the Browns by issuing bonds for construction of the new enclosed football stadium in Brook Park.

While the Browns officials are waiting to find out if the State lawmakers will approve their request for $600 million in bonds they continue to show off the proposal to the public and push forward with plans for a domed stadium complex.

Officials with the Browns have said the project will benefit all of Northeast Ohio.

There is no guarantee, however, that the proposed amendment will make the House version of the budget.

The State representatives are set to vote on their version of the budget on April 9th. The House budget will then be sent to the Senate. The operating budget will not be finalized until the end of June.

State Representative Melanie Miller, (R) District 67, has spoken out in favor of the project.

However, the State Representative Terrence Upchurch, (D) District 20, said he wants the Browns to remain in downtown Cleveland – “I am going to do everything I can to make sure this is not amended into the budget.”

The Governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine, has proposed raising the tax on sports gaming to help provide increased funding for stadium construction.

The Governor’s office recently sent out a statement which read, “The Governor continues to believe his plan is the best plan to help fund these facilities for all Ohioans. The Governor’s plan will provide reliable funds for the stadiums, the arenas and school participation fees while being less expensive versus bond funding. And the Governor’s plan is paid for by the out-of-State corporations instead of the Ohio taxpayers.”
