Costs of Huntington Bank Field Cleveland Brown increase Image: Cleveland Browns

Construction on the National Football League (NFL) (US) team Cleveland Browns’ new stadium is set to begin soon but the costs are already growing.

‘talksport.com’ stated that the state-of-the-art dome is to be built in the suburb of Brook Park (suburb of Cleveland) around 16 miles South of the NFL team’s current home – the Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Ohio (US).

The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland (US). The Browns compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the American Football Conference North Division.

The 67,431-capacity Huntington Bank Field is a stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. It is the home field of the National Football League (NFL) team Cleveland Browns and serves as a venue for the other events such as college and high school football, soccer, hockey, and concerts.

‘talksport.com’ further stated that the initial estimates for the project, which will break a league record, came in at around $2.4 billion – with a 50-50 private-public split proposed.

The State of Ohio is set to contribute $600 million in unclaimed funds alone but that funding is currently being challenged in the court.

And to add to the headache the latest figures confirmed by the Browns reveal the price of the project is rising.

The new indoor stadium is now estimated to cost $2.6bn.

According to the team, the additional costs do not stem from inflation but instead allow for “future enhancements focused on creating the best stadium fan experience and in sports”.

Browns Owners to Increase Contribution for Stadium Project

The Principal Owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, rather than the public, will be stumping up the extra cash.

The Haslam Sports Group (HSG) is increasing their stadium project contribution to $1.755bn and the team officials say that figure now represents 67.5 percent of the total cost.

Berea (US)-based Haslam Sports Group (HSG) mission is to engage and unite the communities through premier sports and entertainment experiences.

In a statement shared recently the family suggested that their “increased investment” will help provide the kind of facility that Cleveland and the wider State of Ohio deserve.

The Haslams said, “We are committed to Northeast Ohio and believe with this increased investment we will create not only a transformative world-class stadium and development but an opportunity to positively impact further growth in our region. We believe that Cleveland and all of Northeast Ohio deserve this state of the art, first-of-its-kind venue and we will continue to work on our commitment to build a stadium and football team that our fans and community will be proud of.”

Under the new cost breakdown a $245m investment is proposed from Brook Park which the Browns hope will be generated by the admissions taxes and the city income taxes from the site.

The Brook Park Mayor Edward Orcutt is still finalizing the negotiations with the HSG before taking it forward to the City Council.

The Browns hope the total $845m, or 32.5 percent, in public investment will be covered with return from the project generated tax revenue.

What will the new Browns Stadium look like?

A new domed stadium will serve as the centerpiece of a mixed-use Brook Park development to be built close to the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

It will mark Northeast Ohio’s largest economic development initiative to date and the Browns have designed it with the fans and the community in mind.

The 67,500-seat ‘Super Theater’ facility, designed by the leading sports architecture firm HKS, will be capable of hosting premier large-scale events the year-round beyond the Browns games.

Dallas (US)-based HKS is a global firm of architects, designers, planners, and advisors who create places noted for their beauty and performance. Its 1,800 people in 29 offices are united by the belief that an environmental, social and governance approach to design achieves design excellence.

Plans include the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Final Fours, the international soccer matches and the concerts for crowds of up to 75,000 as well as a future Super Bowl (the annual league championship game of the NFL).

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates the student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States and one (1) in Canada. It also organizes the athletic programs of the colleges and helps over 500,000 college student athletes who compete annually in college sports. The headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The NCAA Final Four is the last stage of the March Madness where the four remaining teams battle for a spot in the national championship.

The new stadium will also boast a rather unique NFL feature with a steep ‘Dawg Pound’ stand to be built to house the diehard Browns fans and bring them closer to the onfield action.

The stand will be set at a 34-degree angle to create a “powerful wall of sound”.

Pat McAfee is a fan of the sloped stand emphasizing that it will bring more of a “college football atmosphere” to the NFL games.

New York (US)-based the National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league in the United States. Composed of 32 teams it is divided equally between the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The NFL is one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada and the highest professional level of American football in the world.

It will also include seats lower and closer to the field than in any other stadium in the league with the first row of seats being approximately 16 feet from the field.

With a ceremonial groundbreaking planned for the end of April construction on the stadium will soon begin and an opening date ahead of the 2029 NFL season is the target.
