Mâs Monumental stadium financing secured Image: River Plate

Argentinian football club Club Atlético River Plate has secured financing for stadium renovations and awarded the construction contract for the Mâs Monumental expansion to Grupo ENG.

Yahoo Sports said River Plate has set a global milestone by securing international financing of $100 million for the expansion and roofing of the Mâs Monumental Stadium.

River Plate secured the 10-year loan from IDB Invest (part of the Inter-American Development Bank Group) and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF).

This is the first time that organizations such as BID Invest and CAF have granted a loan of this magnitude to a non-profit civil association, validating the current management’s financial strength and transparency.

The finances of the Argentine club will not be affected as the project will be funded through the international loans which will be paid with River’s own revenue.

Club Atlético River Plate is an Argentine professional sports club based in the Belgrano neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It plays in the Liga Profesional, the highest level of the Argentine football league system.

The 85,018-capacity El Monumental, currently known as Mâs Monumental for sponsorship reasons, is an association football stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Located in the Belgrano neighborhood it serves as the residence of Club Atlético River Plate.

River Plate recently announced plans to expand capacity of the Mâs Monumental by 16,000 taking it to a huge 101,000 capacity.

Plans include a new 360-degree, four-tier upper bowl and a full roof, designed in collaboration with the German firm Schlaich bergermann partner, which has been responsible for iconic stadiums such as the Santiago Bernabéu and the Allianz Arena.

Stuttgart (Germany)-based Schlaich bergermann partner is a renowned German independent consulting engineering firm specializing in lightweight, long-span roof structures, bridges, towers, and solar power plants.

The final cost is expected to come in at $145 million and has an estimated completion time of 36 months with completion projected for April 2029, in time for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Grupo ENG will be the main contractor.

The project is designed to allow River Plate to continue playing at the venue with minimal disruption (maximum of three home matches potentially affected).

The Mâs Monumental hosted the 1978 World Cup Final where Argentina beat the Netherlands 3-1 to claim their first title.

The stadium hosts the intense Superclásico between River and the Argentine professional football club Boca Juniors, and has staged multiple Copa América and Copa Libertadores finals.
