The Cape Town Stadium in South Africa has now been renamed again to DHL Stadium after a multiyear naming right partnership was signed with the logistics company DHL Express.

The ‘IOL’ stated that the Cape Town Stadium was initially known as the Green Point Stadium before its name was changed. The stadium had already got its new moniker since June 1st, 2021, but due to the COVID-19 blight in South Africa an official announcement was not made regarding the same.

The 62,000-capacity DHL Stadium is an association football and rugby union stadium in Cape Town, South Africa, that was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

The ‘IOL’ further stated that the stadium branding is expected to commence shortly with the DHL Express announcing the naming rights deal on September 29th.

Bonn (Germany)-headquartered the DHL International GmbH is an international courier, package delivery and express mail service, which is a division of the German logistics firm Deutsche Post. The company delivers over 1.5 billion parcels per year.

The newly refurbished 62,000-capacity stadium is also the new home of the rugby union teams DHL Stormers and DHL Western Province who moved there earlier this year.

The venue has hosted numerous events starting from the Cape Town Sevens and also the Match for Africa recurring set of tennis exhibition matches. It was organized by the Swiss tennis great Roger Federer to raise money for the Roger Federer Foundation.

Said DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa CEO Hennie Heymans, “DHL is the most international company in the world with a purpose of connecting people and improving lives. It’s very important for us as a brand to make a difference in lives of the local communities in which we operate and a partnership of this nature really solidifies our optimism and commitment that we have for South Africa.”

Stated Lesley De Reuck, CEO, DHL Stadium, “I am immensely excited to announce and confirm DHL as our new partner. The launching of the DHL Stadium marks the beginning of a new era for the stadium. DHL have always been innovative leaders in the world of logistics, and through their contributions to the international express industry, DHL is synonymous with excellence the world over. They are a highly recognized and reputable brand, and we are proud to be associated with DHL.”

Heymans remains optimistic despite COVID-19 continuing to devastate economies worldwide with the sports venue sector too writhing from the sting -“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we believe that sporting, entertainment and business events will continue to do good business gradually. Our role as responsible corporate citizens will be to ensure that patrons experience world class events, with a strict health and safety approach. This partnership will help us to play our part in supporting a thriving South African economy, from both a sporting and business perspective.”

Remarked Mayco Member for Finance, Ian Neilson, “When the City built such a world-class stadium as a host of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, we needed to make it happen for the economic opportunities and nation-building prestige that it would bring. However, we knew that after the event, we’d have to make it a financially sustainable landmark. Since then, we have been finding out ways to reduce the burden of carrying the operational costs of the stadium. We have upgraded the facility in the form of hospitality suites, securing a primary anchor tenant and most recently, a naming rights partner. Importantly, this stadium remains an inclusive, multipurpose sporting and events facility.”
