New debt facility opened for Capital One Arena renovation Image: Monumental Sports & Entertainment

The Monumental Sports & Entertainment has finalized a $215 million debt facility with the U.S. Bank acting as the collateral agent to fund ongoing, extensive renovations of the Capital One Arena.

‘SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL’ stated that this funding adds to a previous $515 million agreement with D.C., pushing the total project cost to over $1 billion for a comprehensive modernization scheduled for completion by the 2027-2028 seasons.

The Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), located in Washington, DC, is one of the largest integrated sports and entertainment companies in the United States with one of the most diverse partnership groups in all of sports.

The 20,356-capacity Capital One Arena is an indoor arena in Washington, D.C. Located in the Chinatown section of the larger Penn Quarter neighborhood the Capital One Arena sits atop the Gallery Place rapid transit station of the Washington Metro.

The U.S. Bank, with headquarters in Minneapolis, is the fifth-largest commercial bank in the United States providing a comprehensive range of financial services including personal banking, business banking, mortgage services, and investment management.

‘SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL’ further stated that the new debt facility supports the multiyear, multiphase transformation of the arena to create a “best-in-class” venue.

Renovations include the addition of ‘Innovation Suites’, expanded concourses, 65 percent more concession areas and 30 percent more restrooms.

The total project cost has escalated to over $1 billion and the renovations are slated for completion by the 2027-2028 National Hockey League (NHL)/National Basketball Association (NBA) seasons.

The initiative is part of a 2024 agreement with D.C. to keep the NHL team Washington Capitals and the NBA team Washington Wizards at the downtown venue through 2050.

The renovations are designed to enhance the fan experience adding more premium spaces and improved, modern facilities.
