Stefan Goertz who works for d&b audiotechnik, Germany, feels that sound is more than volume. It is something shared, wanted and experienced. His life revolves around the audio world.

As he puts in, “Sound is invisible, loudspeaker are not. But it is our duty to ensure that they are as seamless as possible.”

Goertz and his team are into the business of elevating the quality of the sound systems not just for the listeners but for the users, owners and business.

Stefan Goertz is an Electro-Acoustic Engineer and is passionate about creating and deploying loudspeakers and amplifiers for various events applications. His role in d&b audiotechnik requires him to train sales partners, consultants and users for knowledge and experience transfer mainly in the domain of installed sound systems.

In a conversation with ‘Coliseum’, Stefan Goertz, Director of Global Education and Application Support, d&b audiotechnik, Germany, states that d&b audiotechnik has put 40 years into creating good sound system solutions. He firmly believes that everyone should experience the same impeccable quality of sound regardless of their position in the audience in the venues – an unobtrusive sound system. He points out that “‘rider friendliness’ (a document that outlines the specific requirements and requests of a performer or band for a live event or music festival) is key especially when one wants to broaden the flexibility of the venue”.

d&b audiotechnik

Backnang (Germany)-based the d&b audiotechnik is the leading manufacturer of audio and sound reinforcement solutions not only for the touring global (music) artistes but also for the temporary and permanently installed sound systems in the sports facilities such as the stadiums and the indoor arenas all over the world.

Stefan Goertz started by providing details of the company – “We are German manufacturers of audio solutions for loudspeakers and amplifiers. We see hybrid applications of sound systems in stadia more and more. First and foremost we have to ensure that any announcement is audible even under very dramatic situations like sudden panic among the audiences but still everybody knows where to go.”

Crowded places such as the stadiums during sports activities or concerts involve a lot of people hence coming up with a befitting sound system that will make everybody hear the music or transmission clearly and with considerable quality is no mean task and Goertz and his team strive to do exactly that. They apply acoustic design in such a manner so that the sound travels evenly in the stadium.

Goertz observed that different features such as the sound control panels, barriers and even geometry of the seats assist in controlling the sounds and how the sound behaves in the stadium.

He further observed that if a stadium is skirted by a neighborhood then the venue operators/owners should be alert about the noise emissions because “people in the neighborhood want a silent environment unlike the ones inside the venue who want to be entertained”.

Sound distribution in the stadiums has been made easier through the advancement in audio technology. The stadiums have replaced large loudspeakers with distributed public address (PA) system so that the audience get to enjoy sound in an optimal manner. The line array speakers help to spread sound quality across long distances.

Observed Goertz, “We have already considered and identified stadia as an entertainment environment not only for sports and track and field events but a lot more for concerts. Stadia often are not only for premier sport experience but have to serve increasingly as an entertainment and lifestyle destination for the concerts. Concerts are not only held for a single night but in Germany it is held three nights in a row. We ensure that the sound is spread uniformly to the last row.”

Cardioid Broadband Directivity

The d&b audiotechnik Cardioid Broadband Directivity allows for cardioid-like behavior (a heart-shaped pattern) across a wide range of frequencies, not just low frequencies, resulting in improved sound quality and control – “It helps to reduce noise emissions through the open roof and lowers the reverb in the stadium by less reflection from the closed roof.“

Wrap-up

Smart technology application has been adopted in management of sound in stadiums to create a new kind of sound management system.

As Stefan Goertz wrapped up by stating, “We at d&b audiotechnik leave no stone unturned to ensure that the quality of the sound is good in the venue regardless of the position of the person in the hall. We ensure that everybody in the stadium, no matter where he or she is sitting, gets to listen to clear, good quality sound. We provide professional audio technology and solutions to accurately transfer passions through high-end quality speech and music reproduction.”
