Comic Con is coming to the DHL Stadium (South Africa)!

‘news24.com’ stated that Capetonians, dust off your superhero costumes, review your wish list of collectables and get your gaming on – Comic Con Cape Town is headed your way!

With the return of Comic Con Africa this September in Johannesburg, the festival will branch out to its fans in Cape Town from April 27th to April 29th, 2023 at the world-class DHL Stadium.

A comic book convention or Comic Con is an event with a primary focus on comic books and comic book culture, in which comic book fans gather to meet creators, experts and each other. Commonly, comic conventions are multiday events hosted at convention centers, hotels or college campuses.

The 55,000-capacity DHL Stadium is an association football and rugby union stadium in Cape Town, South Africa, that was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

‘news24.com’ further stated that and to make things more exciting, Comic Con Cape Town and FanCon, Cape Town’s longstanding pop-culture convention, will be joining forces to reignite the events industry by hosting a sustainable event that meets fan expectations.

Together, they plan to create a combined event in 2023 that will be a celebration unlike anything Cape Town has ever seen.

Noted Nizar Abrahams, Event Organizer at FanCon, “FanCon has grown from strength to strength since its launch in 2016. Partnering with Comic Con Cape Town enables us to create a bigger and even more awesome event that will reinvigorate the pop culture community in the province. FanCon will be focusing especially on managing the already hugely popular artist alley at the show, and we will continue our role of bringing top-class international and local comic creators to our shores.”

FanCon is an annual convention and slice of geek heaven held in the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) that celebrates the comic and pop culture industry. This yearly comic con was the first of its kind in South Africa. It is a multiday event that draws fan boys and fan girls from around the country and features international and local guests, an artist’s alley, panel talks, cosplay, exhibitors, workshops, tabletop gaming, geek merch, signing sessions, and more.

Attendees can look forward to a mind-blowing weekend filled with fun and excitement that will cater to enthusiasts, newcomers and families alike.

In Store:

  • An exhibition floor featuring the latest and greatest in pop culture merch, comics and collectables;
  • The best of the best in the Artist Alley as curated by FanCon;
  • An exciting panel program of talks and presentations, gaming activations and tournaments;
  • The latest in gaming gear and accessories; and
  • The fan-favorite Cosplay Regional Championship competition, among other cosplay activities.

Remarked Rene Staack, Comic Con Africa General Manager, “Following all the chaos caused by the pandemic over the past few years, we cannot wait to treat the Western Cape with the mother of all events that celebrate geek and pop culture. We are excited to work with FanCon, who are passionate about the community and have the same vision for the growth of a Cape Town pop culture festival.”

Having worked collaboratively before, the City of Cape Town has pledged its commitment to supporting the organizers in making this a truly world-class event.

Commented JP Smith, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, “The impact of such a big event coming to town is that it will benefit fans of the genre, but most importantly, it allows ordinary citizens to gain access to jobs and is an opportunity to highlight the creative sector’s limitless potential.”
