Germany submits bid for ice hockey WC 2027 Image: D-Sports

The German Ice Hockey Federation eV (DEB) submitted the requisite application documents for hosting the 2027 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Ice Hockey World Championship to the IIHF on time which included the State of North Rhine-Westphalia Land capital Düsseldorf in Western Germany – where sits the PSD Bank Dome arena – in the group of applicant Host Cities from Germany.

‘D-Sports’ stated that the tender documents for the Sports City of Düsseldorf were drawn up and submitted to the DEB. Apart from Düsseldorf, Cologne, Mannheim and Munich are also among the applicant Cities in Germany which have thrown their hat into the ice hockey showpiece ring. If IIHF settles for Germany, the sporting showcase will take place in two of the four candidate Host Cities.

Munich (Germany)-based the German Ice Hockey Federation, commonly abbreviated as DEB, is the governing federation of German ice hockey associations. It was established on June 16th, 1963 in Krefeld (City in Germany). Until 1990, it served only the old Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is a worldwide governing body for ice hockey. It is based in Zürich, Switzerland, and has 83 member-countries. The IIHF maintains the IIHF World Ranking based on international ice hockey tournaments.

The Ice Hockey World Championships are an annual international men’s ice hockey tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). First officially held at the 1920 Summer Olympics, it is the sport’s highest profile annual international tournament.

The PSD Bank Dome is a multiuse indoor arena in Düsseldorf, Germany. It opened in 2006. The arena has a capacity to hold 15,151 spectators and 14,282 people for hockey matches.

‘D-Sports’ further stated that the IIHF will take the final decision on the 2027 World Championship host country at the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship to be held in Tampere (Finland) and Riga (Latvia) in May 2023.

Stated Stephan Keller, Mayor of Düsseldorf, “With the Düsseldorfer EG (Düsseldorf), we are home to one of the most traditional ice hockey clubs in Europe. The passion for this sport is omnipresent in the Sports City of Düsseldorf and I am sure that we can stage the World Cup in a grandiose way.”

Observed Burkhard Hintzsche, City Director of the State Capital of Düsseldorf, “Hosting big-ticket events with international appeal is one of the core competencies of our City. With our unique construct, we offer a one-stop solution, and have been able to convince the organizers of the Invictus Games 2023, Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) EURO 2024 or the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games 2025 to choose us as the Host City. We are also involved in the application process to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027. If Düsseldorf is picked up as the Host City to host the 2027 ice hockey showcase, it will prove to be a kind of cherry on the cake.”

The Invictus Games Düsseldorf 2023 is the sixth edition of the international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women. It will be held from September 9th-16th, 2023.

The 2024 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as UEFA EURO 2024 or simply EURO 2024, will be the 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international men’s football championship of Europe organized by the UEFA. It will be held from June 14th to July 14th, 2024 in Germany and one of the Host Cities is Düsseldorf.

The 2025 FISU Summer World University Games, the XXXII Summer World University Games and commonly known as the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Summer World University Games, the 32nd edition of the event, is scheduled to be held from July 16th-27th, 2025 in the Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany in which falls one of the largest Cities Düsseldorf.

Maintained Michael Brill, head honcho, D.LIVE, “The PSD Bank Dome is a state-of-the-art venue. The arena’s existing infrastructure for holding an ice hockey event meets the highest international standards and will play a key role if Düsseldorf is picked up as one of the Host Cities.”
