The Wigan Athletic F.C. Women and the rugby league team Wigan Warriors Women officially unveiled their new home – the Edge Hall Road Community Stadium in Orrell, Greater Manchester (UK) – to the supporters and the members of the public at a special event held recently to mark the opening of the Wigan Athletic Women’s Football and Wigan Warriors Women’s Rugby League teams’ new home.

‘WIGAN ATHLETIC’ stated that players of both Wigan Athletic Women and Wigan Warriors Women’s Rugby League teams were in attendance alongside Wigan Athletic Women Non-Executive Chair Brenda Spencer and Wigan Warriors’ (Men) Chairman Professor Chris Brookes as well as the Council and the National Health Service (NHS) members.

The Wigan Athletic Football Club Women is a women’s football club based in Wigan, Greater Manchester, England (UK). The club plays in the Championship Division of the Lancashire Women’s County League and are the current champions.

The Lancashire Football Association Women’s County League is an amateur competitive women’s association football competition based in Lancashire, England (UK) run by the Lancashire Football Association Women’s League (a women’s football competition in Lancashire, England). Founded in 1996 as the Lancashire Football Association Girls League the league consists of two Divisions at Levels 7 and 8 of the women’s pyramid.

The Wigan Warriors Women are the official women’s team of the Wigan Warriors club. The team is one of 11 teams the club currently boasts. The team was created in 2017 and had its first season in 2018. The club competes in the Rugby Football League (RFL) Women’s Super League which the team won during its first season.

The Rugby Football League Women’s Super League (known as the Betfred Women’s Super League due to sponsorship reasons) is the elite Women’s rugby league club competition in England (UK).

The 3,000-capacity Edge Hall Road Community Stadium is a multisport stadium located in Orrell, Greater Manchester (UK). It serves as the residence of the Wigan Athletic F.C. Women and the rugby league side Wigan Warriors Women.

The National Health Service (NHS) is the publicly funded healthcare system in England and one of the four National Health Service systems in the United Kingdom. It is the second largest single-payer healthcare system in the world after the Brazilian Sistema Único de Saúde (Brazil’s publicly funded healthcare system).

‘WIGAN ATHLETIC’ further stated that as part of the day’s activities the junior players enjoyed a morning of football and rugby league-based activities before taking a tour alongside the community members around the new facility including the new gym, the changing and medical zones and engaging with the key stakeholders involved in the development of the site.

The redevelopment of the Edge Hall Road training facility is a fundamental statement in the club’s aspirations for the women and girls’ pathway which will see the enhanced facilities support both Women’s Football and Rugby League development.

With the amazing facilities on offer the site will help increase professionalism, attract a regular fan base and create wider revenue opportunities via sponsorship and other commercial revenue streams whilst also providing a hub for women’s physical activity, health and wellbeing for the wider community.
