Essen football stadium revamp kick-off

German football club Rot-Weiss Essen is scheduled to begin work next year on a redevelopment of its Stadion an der Hafenstraße.

RevierSport said RW Essen fans can look forward to a modernized stadium and, above all, a fully enclosed stadium without any open corners, with completion projected for 18 months’ time.

The club said that as well as completing work to fill in the four currently open corners of the stadium, infrastructure around the venue will also be partially expanded or upgraded.

Rot-Weiss Essen is a German association football club based in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany). The club plays in the 3. Liga, the third tier of professional football in Germany.

The Stadion an der Hafenstraße, known as the Stadion Essen until 2022, is a stadium in Essen, Germany. Located in the borough of Bergeborbeck it has a capacity to accommodate 20,650 spectators. It serves as the home stadium of the 3. Liga team Rot-Weiss Essen.

Stadium operator Grundstücksverwaltung Stadt Essen (GVE) and the Wolff Group, responsible for planning and project management, have released new visualizations of the stadium with the corners completed.

The initial response has been largely positive. Many RWE supporters have expressed their approval in comments on social media. Some are even enthusiastic about the planning images, which can be viewed on the stadium’s website.

Construction is planned to begin in the summer of next year, no later than June after the end of the 2026/27 season.

The new facilities will be available for use during the construction period. This means that as soon as a section of the stadium is fully enclosed and opened, fans will be allowed in.

Consequently, the stadium capacity will gradually increase from the current 20,000 to the target of 26,600 standing and seated places.

The expansion is intended to improve the stadium’s future viability for league matches as well as for national and international games.

In addition to enclosing the corners, the infrastructure and public transport connections will also be improved.

Project costs amount to almost €30 million, plus €1.2 million in planning costs, and are to be financed through loans.
