Flamengo agree land deal for Rio stadium

Brazilian football team Clube de Regatas do Flamengo has reached an agreement with the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro to retain the Gasômetro land in the city for its new stadium.

Flamengo said that on the back of the deal, the club will continue with the feasibility and development studies for the new stadium project, an essential step to ensure its future implementation.

These studies, initiated at least eight months ago by the current Flamengo administration, included technical and economic evaluations conducted by specialized companies and consulting firms including FGV, Arena Venues + Events, Soloeste Engenharia Ltda., and AECOM.

Flamengo last summer submitted a winning bid of R$138.195m (£19.9m/€23.54m/$25.49m) to secure land at the Gasômetro site in Rio de Janeiro for its new stadium.

Shortly after, Arena Events + Venues revealed its plans for the highly anticipated Flamengo Stadium to the club’s board of directors and members.

With a capacity of 78,000 fans, the stadium will combine innovative design, state-of-the-art technology, and a multifunctional vision that promises to impact the country’s football and cultural landscape.

The stadium’s concept draws inspiration from the culture of Rio de Janeiro and the passion of Flamengo fans, blending architectural solutions that balance functionality and emotion.

Flamengo added that due to the need for further investigation, the parties also agreed to extend the deadlines required for project execution to ensure legal certainty and full continuity of the initiative.

Flamengo and the Municipality remain aligned and committed to making the proposal viable, for the benefit of the city, the Club’s members, and its thousands of fans.

The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, more commonly referred to as simply Flamengo, is a Brazilian multisports club based in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in the neighborhood of Gávea, best known for their professional football team.

The club plays in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top of the Brazilian football league system. They are one of two clubs to have never been relegated from the top division.

Flamengo is the most popular team in Brazil with more than 46.9 million, fans equivalent to 21.9 percent of the population that supports a team.

The club currently play matches at the 73,139-capacity Maracanã Stadium. Officially named the Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho or Journalist Mario Filho Stadium the Maracanã is an association football stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It serves as the residence of CR Flamengo and also Fluminense Football Club. Owned by the Rio de Janeiro State Government, the stadium is now managed by the clubs Fluminense and Flamengo. It is located in the Maracanã neighborhood, named after the Rio Maracanã, a now canalized river in Rio de Janeiro.
