The initial concept and the financing of a new functional building for the 2.Bundesliga team Fortuna Düsseldorf (Germany) have been completed.

The ‘Fortuna Düsseldorf’ stated that it has found a professional and ambitious partner for the realization of a new functional building in Peker Holding.

The 2.Bundesliga team Fortuna Düsseldorf is a German football club in Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Founded in 1895, Fortuna entered the league in 1913 and was a fixture in the top flight from the early 1920s up to the creation of the Bundesliga (top of the German football league system) in 1963.

The Merkur Spiel-Arena is a multifunctional football stadium in Düsseldorf, Germany. The stadium serves as the residence of the Fortuna Düsseldorf and holds 54,600 and boasts a retractable roof. Its special heating system allows the stadium to host events even at the height of winter and keep fans warm.

The ‘Fortuna Düsseldorf’ further stated that Fortuna and Peker have signed a letter of intent to this effect. The real estate and project development company based in Düsseldorf will support the club both professionally and economically in the planning and construction of the new building. The realization and operation of the functional building is to be taken over by a subsidiary of Peker Holding, PekFor 95 GmbH, which was founded specifically for this purpose.

The prerequisite is that the political parties of the German State North Rhine-Westphalia capital Düsseldorf approve the transfer of the property in heritable building rights proposed by the administration under Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller (Mayor of Düsseldorf). Likewise, the Supervisory Board of Fortuna must approve the project before the next steps can be initiated.

A central component of the cooperation between Peker and Fortuna Düsseldorf will then be a comprehensive and long-term sponsorship package. The planned functional building will serve as the professional home for all U19 and U23 players, the licensed players and for the office.

Fortuna believes in promoting young talent. For more than a year, the entire Management Board with Thomas Röttgermann, Klaus Allofs, Uwe Klein, and Christian Koke with Murat Beyazyüz, the person responsible for Peker Holding and its bank, Volksbank Düsseldorf Neuss e.G. with CEO Rainer Mellis and Director Roberto Milandri at the helm, has been working through the sweat of their brows to realize this project of Fortuna.

Fortuna will initially be the tenant of the complex. The Peker Holding/PekFor 95 GmbH and Fortuna will, however, lay down regulations that later paves the way for Fortuna to become the owner of the functional building.

To this end, the Düsseldorf architecture office ‘RKW Architektur +’ has already drawn up a preliminary plan in close coordination with Fortuna and the Peker Holding and has submitted it to the concerned authorities. On an area of approximately 6,300 m² over three floors, functional areas for the licensed players, U23 and U19 will be lodged so that they can work under one roof for the first time. The entire office, which is currently located in two different sites, will also work centrally from the functional building.

A roof comprising solar panels and a façade structure are just two elements of the future-oriented, flexible and sustainable design concept.

Remarked Thomas Röttgermann, Chairman of the Executive Board of Fortuna Düsseldorf, “We are very pleased that we have found an excellent partner in Peker Holding who will support us in realizing a new building. From the very beginning, Peker Holding has convinced us that the planned functional building will become a reality. Peker Holding is very committed to this project and is a well-known and respected company in Düsseldorf and specifically caters to our special requirements as an association. Together as the Board of Directors, we worked overtime to make the functional building project of Fortuna a reality because finances for such a project is hard to come by for a club like Fortuna. It is due to the dint of our hard work that we have found sponsors for this project. Due to the pandemic, we have tightened our purse strings which will stand us in good stead in the future.”

Added Röttgermann, “Before proceeding with implementing the above project, informed decisions will have to be made. We are already engaged in constructive talks with the City and are taking up matters one at a time. The Fortuna Supervisory Board is also involved in the whole exercise. After the draft contracts are completed, the Board of Directors will finally submit the project to the Board of Directors for their approval.”

Klaus Allofs, Board Member Football and Development, Communication and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), “The Peker-Fortuna partnership is a decisive step for the latter, because without a functioning infrastructure the club will not be in a position to compete in the future. The planned new building will open up new avenues for us in terms of functionality and closer cooperation under one roof. It will prove to be a milestone for the sporting sector. We are grateful to Peker Holding for their partnership-based commitment especially at a time when COVID-19 is back to haunt Germany.”

Remarked Düsseldorf Mayor Keller, “Fortuna Düsseldorf should go on to become a top-flight club and for this a functional building is required. I support the project and request the powers that be to approve the transfer of the property.”

Commented Murat Beyazyüz of Peker Holding, “While negotiating with the top brass of Fortuna, we realized that we shared the same values and ideas. The values of family, tradition, diversity, solidarity, and transparent communication are something which Fortuna and Peker as well as our partners believe in and follow. With this we want our partnership to go from strength to strength.”
