New location for The Dome in Frankfurt Image: Katz Group

‘TheDOME’ – the multifunctional arena which is being planned by The Dome Betriebsgesellschaft and was earlier supposed to come up near the Frankfurt Airport, will now sit in Hattersheim am Main – a town in Germany.

The ‘FAZ’ stated that several people associated with the project and requesting anonymity informed that an area on the A 66 on the border in the Western Frankfurt district of Sindlingen is where the planned arena will sit.

The City Council of Frankfurt has always disapproved of ‘TheDOME’ coming up near the Frankfurt airport.

‘TheDOME’ is a planned multifunctional 23,000-capacity arena to come up in Germany. Canada’s Katz Group is planning to build one of Europe’s largest multifunctional arenas and the earlier plan had it that it will come up next to one of the continent’s busiest airport in the German City of Frankfurt.

With the above decision, there has been a shift in the plans now with the concerned authorities settling for Hattersheim am Main which is not adjacent to the Frankfurt Airport but little away from the international airport with no communication hiccups.

The ‘FAZ’ further stated that among others, the Löwen Frankfurt ice hockey team and the United Volleys (professional sport team) will use the hall for their games. Concerts and other events are also planned.

The Löwen Frankfurt is a professional ice hockey team based in Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany. They currently play in the tier two DEL2. The club is the successor of the Frankfurt Lions, formed in 1991, which experienced its greatest success in 2004 when it won the Deutsche Eishockey Liga.

The Mayor of Hattersheim, Klaus Schindling of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), who was re-elected recently, had denied before the elections that ‘TheDOME’ would come up in Hattersheim.

‘TheDOME’ authorities refused to comment on the above decision.

No love lost

There is no love lost between the people associated with the ‘TheDOME’ project and the Kaiserlei arena development.

The Kaiserlei multifunctional arena project in Offenbach, Germany, has been in the works for more than 15 years now. It is hanging fire endlessly. The project was shelved and then a glimmer of hope floated in the form of the professional basketball club Skyliners Frankfurt who put fresh lease of life to the development with the support of the Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt in 2021.

The City authorities were never in favor of ‘TheDOME’ coming up next to the airport.

The people associated with ‘TheDOME’ project have charged the City Council of Frankfurt for trying to scuttle the development with so much of mass appeal. This is why they looked around for a site in and around Frankfurt. The Löwen Frankfurt and the United Volleys have also charged the City Council of turning a Nelson’s eye towards ‘TheDOME’ development.
