The multifunctional arena planned at Frankfurt (Germany) – TheDOME – is likely to get the nod soon for construction to start with the application for the project-related development plan submitted to the City Planning Office, Frankfurt, recently.

Canada’s Katz Group is planning to build one of Europe’s largest multifunctional arenas next to one of the continent’s busiest airport in the German City of Frankfurt. TheDOME will be built at a cost of €300 million and will be able to fit in 23,000 spectators.

Located right at Europe’s third biggest airport and next to two major German highways, TheDOME will be seen by over 100 million people who will be crossing the venue every year. Sports fans will also be able to experience thrilling sports events such as World Championships and European Championships in TheDOME.

The planned multifunctional arena at Kaiserlei in Frankfurt could not strike a chord with the City Council authorities because the final bid, which should have been submitted by the Langano group of bidders by May 11th , was not received by the submission office of the City of Frankfurt am Main, and this “annoyed” them a lot.

A press release sent out in this regard stated that since the arena at Kaiserlei seems to be a non-starter, Markus Frank, Head, Frankfurt Sports Department, has stated that the municipal authorities have promised full support to construct ‘TheDome’ and the people in charge of the planned arena have been asked to gird up loins to get the whole process rolling.

The release further stated that a few weeks back, the Vice-President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and Chairman of Edmonton, which is owned by the KATZ Group Oilers, Bob Nicholson, toured the property and stated that the multiuse arena planned near the Frankfurt Airport offers ideal conditions to hold big-ticket events like the European Championships and the National Hockey League (NHL) away games – “Nothing beats the capacity and the location of the planned arena. Period”.

The release also quoted the German national player and Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl as stating, “I am from Cologne. But the ‘TheDOME’ project is unique and it would be great to play the opening match in the arena once completed.”

For weeks now, TheDOME managers have been holding intensive discussions with top international companies, as well as regionally based medium-sized companies, who are keen to partake of in the whole development.

Stated Jürgen Schreiber, CEO of the main investor Katz Group and Managing Director, TheDOME, “We are pleased that popular companies are interested in the project and view it as an international lighthouse project.”

“It is now necessary to make rapid progress on the project and also hold talks with fans in this regard. Taking into view the COVID-19 situation, the right approach should be adopted so that the development is a smooth process,” Schreiber added.

The release further quoted Schreiber as stating that ‘TheDome’s’ primary objective will be to attract big celebrities of the entertainment world – “Of course, our doors will also be open for professional clubs Löwen Frankfurt (professional ice hockey team) and United Volleys (professional sports team) – both of whom are based in Frankfurt. Even the Skyliners (professional basketball club based in Frankfurt) who are supporting the Kaiserlei arena people who are still planning a private project – ‘TheDOME’s’ door is also open for them.”

Schreiber added, “Our planning office people as well as WPV (who are lending the design of the arena) have calculated that the whole development will generate around 7,000 jobs in the construction phase and around 2,800 permanent jobs once completed. At a time, when unemployment has reached a peak due to the coronavirus scourge, we want to send a positive signal to the people of the region through ‘TheDome’ project.”

One thing is for sure – sports fans will experience thrilling and legendary moments in ‘TheDOME’ and it will also provide a new home for the local ice hockey and basketball teams. It will also enjoy a hotel with 250 rooms and a forum in which, in addition to a three-field sports hall with a spectator capacity of 2,500 seats, additional experience and lounge offers can be integrated.
