New national stadium planned in Tbilisi Image: Government of Georgia

In the framework of enhancing the country’s sports infrastructure, Georgia is set to build a new 70,000-capacity stadium on the outskirts of its capital Tbilisi.

Besides the above stadium, the Government is about to launch a large-scale project aiming to build stadiums in over 40 Municipalities.

‘GEORGIA TODAY’ stated that the goal of the project, announced by the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, is to distinguish Georgia as one of the major players in the international tournaments and will greatly benefit Georgia’s chances to host the 2028 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League Final.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach football in Europe and the transcontinental countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan as well as the West Asian countries of Cyprus, Armenia and Israel. The UEFA consists of 55 national association members. Since 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the FIFA and the UEFA suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.

The UEFA Champions League is an annual club association football competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) that is contested by the top-division European clubs.

‘GEORGIA TODAY’ further stated that the stadium will be designed with multifunctional capacities to properly accommodate major football and rugby events as well as concerts and events of other sorts to attract tourism and investments. As per the announcement, a Dutch company and the UEFA experts work in collaboration to supervise the process and deliver a product that meets the international standards.

Commented Kobakhidze, “This is more than just a stadium – it’s a project that will elevate Georgia’s image and strengthen its role in global sports.”

The above decision was overviewed at a meeting held recently which was attended by the Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, the Sports Minister of Georgia Shalva Gogoladze and the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia Irakli Karseladze where they discussed the initiative’s potential to attract investments and international events.
