European football is set to return to Udine (Italy) in style. At the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Executive Committee meeting held recently the Bluenergy Stadium was selected as the venue for the UEFA Super Cup 2025.

‘UDINESE CALCIO’ stated that scheduled for August 13th, the prestigious match will see the winners of the Champions League and Europa League face off. This marks the first time the trophy, one of the most coveted in European football, will be contested in Italy, a historic moment for Udine and its stadium.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach football in Europe and the transcontinental countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan as well as the West Asian countries of Cyprus, Armenia and Israel. The UEFA consists of 55 national association members. Since 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the FIFA and UEFA suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.

The 2025 UEFA Super Cup will be the 50th edition of the UEFA Super Cup, an annual football match organized by the UEFA and contested by the reigning champions of the top two European club competitions, the UEFA Champions League (an annual club association football competition contested by the top-division European clubs) and the UEFA Europa League (the second-tier competition of European club football and an annual football club competition for the eligible European football clubs).

The Stadio Friuli (currently known as the Bluenergy Stadium for sponsorship reasons) is an all-seater football stadium in Udine, Italy, and the home of the Serie A club Udinese Calcio. The stadium was built in 1976 and has a capacity of 25,144.

The Udinese Calcio is a professional football club based in Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. The team currently competes in the Serie A, the first tier of Italian football.

‘UDINESE CALCIO’ further stated that the selection of the Bluenergy Stadium is testament to the quality of the venue’s facilities and its reputation among the Italian and the European football institutions. Since its renovation the stadium has played host to the Italy national team on four occasions, most recently this October 2024, and was the venue for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship Final in 2019.

The UEFA European Under-21 Championship, the UEFA Under-21 Championship, or simply the EURO Under-21, is a biennial football competition contested by the European Men’s under-21 national teams of the UEFA member associations.

The Udinese Calcio’s sustainability initiatives also influenced the UEFA’s decision aligning with the goal of switching to a circular economy within European football.

This will be the most significant sporting event ever held at the Bluenergy Stadium and in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region. The match will bring two of Europe’s top teams to Udine shining the international spotlight on the City and the region. This achievement is the result of Udinese Calcio’s consistent efforts reinforcing its role as an Ambassador for the region in Italy and abroad. The club also promotes the region through the Io sono Friuli-Venezia Giulia logo on its jerseys bringing tangible benefits for the area as a whole.

The ‘Io sono Friuli-Venezia Giulia’ logo is a branding initiative representing the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region in Italy essentially translating to ‘I am Friuli-Venezia Giulia’. It signifies a commitment to promoting the region’s local products, sustainability and traceability usually featuring a blue and gold color scheme with a design that highlights the region’s unique identity and often includes a QR code for product information.

Underscored Franco Collavino, Udinese Calcio Managing Director, “Following the UEFA Under-21 Championship Final in 2019 and four important fixtures involving the national team, the Bluenergy Stadium and the Udinese Calcio are honored to host what I would call an epic encounter. This event is not only significant for sport but also for the City of Udine and the entire Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region showcasing the vital role of sport here. While we pledge our utmost commitment to organizing the event it’s worth highlighting that the Udinese project continues to prove its success in attracting high-profile events and enhancing the region. We thank the Italian Football Federation (FIGC – the governing body of football in Italy) and the UEFA for their trust and are confident we will repay it by hosting the Super Cup in one of Europe’s most groundbreaking stadiums.”
