RC Celta de Vigo and its Celta360 sports city project have been recognised as a sustainable sports model committed to the environment.

Celta Vigo said the Afouteza Sports City and the Celta360 project have been recognized with the prestigious BREEAM certification, making Celta the first club in the world to receive this distinction.

The BREEAM certification (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), of British origin and internationally recognized, is one of the most advanced and demanding sustainability assessment systems in construction.

The Afouteza Sports City, also known as the Celta360, is a large, multifunctional sports complex, including a small stadium, developed by the LaLiga team RC Celta in Mos, a municipality located in the Galicia region of Spain.

It’s designed to be a high-performance training environment for young athletes and will also include research labs, cultural and leisure spaces and facilities for sports medicine and tourism.

The complex aims to strengthen RC Celta’s Youth Academy – ‘A Canteira’ (a renowned football development program for the young players recognized as one of the best in Europe) – and position the club as a leader in both academic and sports training.

The Real Club Celta de Vigo, commonly known as the Celta Vigo or RC Celta, is a Spanish professional football club based in Vigo, Galicia, Spain, that competes in LaLiga, the top tier of Spanish football.

Obtaining the BREEAM certification positions Celta as a benchmark not only in the sports field but also in environmental, economic, and social commitment.

Being part of the exclusive group of buildings and facilities that hold this certification, such as Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 2 and various Olympic and World Cup venues, highlights the ambition and level of the Celta360 project.

Carlos Cao, the club’s Director of Infrastructure and Institutional Relations, said, “This certification recognizes the effort made by the team since the beginning of the project with a clear objective, which was, and still is, to respect the environment and our roots.

BREEAM assesses aspects such as land use, energy efficiency, social well-being, and mobility. The project’s integration into the region and its positive impact on the community were especially important.”

Meanwhile, Carlos Calvo, Managing Director of ITG, said, “This is recognition of the club’s effort to adopt the world’s most important sustainability standards in its facilities.

“It’s a clear demonstration that Celta is committed to sustainable integration into its surroundings, which allows the club to reach a significant level of differentiation.”

María Paz, Head of BREEAM Urbanism in Spain, and responsible for verifying that the club meets the necessary requirements, said, “The certification follows a holistic approach, covering aspects such as water management, energy management and community participation.

Celta goes beyond what is required by regulation, making the club’s efforts truly admirable.”

With this achievement, Celta, in collaboration with CBRE, has consolidated its role as a pioneer in the sector and continues its process of building facilities that will stand as examples of sports excellence, innovation, efficiency, and environmental commitment.
