Romanian government approves new stadium in Oradea Image: Municipality of Oradea

The Romanian Government has given the go-ahead for a new stadium to be built in the city of Oradea.

Municipiul Oradea said the Government of Romania has approved the technical-economic indicators related to the new 16,291 seat stadium on Făgărașului Street.

The new venue will be used by local club FC Bihor, who returned to Liga II of Romanian football last season.

FC Bihor currently play at the Iuliu Bodola Stadium multi-purpose stadium in Oradea, Romania. The stadium holds 12,376 people, seated, restricted from 18,000, as the east stand is closed.

The new stadium for the club will be built through a government program, run by the National Investment Company (CNI). The total value of the investment is 472 million lei, approximately €94.4 million.

Facilities will include a hotel with a restaurant, conference rooms and a spa center dedicated to the recovery of athletes.

Following the government decision, the selection procedure for the builder will be the next step in the process. Work on the new stadium, which will be built to UEFA standards, will start next year.

Florin Birta, mayor of the city of Oradea, which has a population of nearly 200,000 people, announced the new stadium, calling it a “significant moment” for the city.

Birta said, “In the next period the selection procedure of the builder will be started. We propose that next year work will begin on the city’s new stadium, which will be built to UEFA standards.

“For the approval of this particularly important project for Oradea, I thank the Government of Romania and all the consulting ministries, the specialists from the National Investment Company, the designers, the Bihor County Council, as well as the Oradea City Hall colleagues.”

President of FC Bihor, George Tătar, said: “In the year in which we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the construction of the main stadium of Oradea and Bihor, the Iuliu Bodola stadium, we received extraordinary news!

“The Government Decision was adopted regarding the approval of the technical-economic indicators for the construction project of the complex sports that includes the new stadium of Oradea.

“This new stadium will have a minimum capacity of 16,000 seats and will comply with the provisions of category 4 provided by the UEFA regulations.

“The FC Bihor project, started by the Oradea City Hall and the Bihor County Council, a few years ago, ticks off with this investment another major goal set for the development of Bihor football. Congratulations to all those who worked and made consistent efforts to achieve this goal, and in particular we thank the mayor of Oradea, Florin Birta.”
