Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Athletics have broken ground on their eagerly anticipated new ballpark in Las Vegas.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, A’s owner John Fisher and Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo were among a host of dignitaries who participated in the ground-breaking ceremony at the site of the A’s eventual new ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal said construction work on the site began in April, when crew began driving pilings to serve as the foundation of the Bjarke Ingels Group designed ballpark.

The 33,000-capacity New Las Vegas Stadium is a future fixed-roof ballpark to be built on the site of the former Tropicana Las Vegas (casino hotel) on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada (US).

It is planned as the new home stadium of the Athletics of Major League Baseball (MLB) after they complete their planned relocation from Oakland, California, to the Las Vegas Metropolitan area.

The domed ballpark is slated to cost $1.75 billion and open for the 2028 season. The ballpark will occupy nine acres, with Bally’s Corp. to develop a new resort and entertainment/retail facilities on 26 acres of the site.

The A’s are playing at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento until their new ballpark is completed.

Fisher said at the ground-breaking ceremony, “These projects they probably look like they happen pretty quickly, but the reality is that there is an incredible amount of work and time and effort and so many people’s involvement to even bring us to today.

“Three years from now, you’ll see the fruits of all of that labor, when, in 2028, we have Opening Day out here on the Las Vegas strip. It’s an epic moment for our 124-year-old franchise.”

Lombardo added, “The conversations still continue, but I anticipate that the pile drivers behind me are going to be hitting the ground sometime this evening and in 2028 we’re going to be throwing a pitch across that plate.”

The A’s hired Marc Badain as their new president in March. He said, “It’s going to be a great moment for the (Fisher) family. They have taken a lot of unfair abuse. And when you get to know John, Laura and the rest of the family, they’re just generous, caring, wonderful, authentic people.

“Similar to my last employer (the Raiders), they’re not in it for the money. I think people make that mistake. They’re doing this for the right reasons.”

Crews have been carrying out early groundwork since late April on the site, in preparation for foundation work to begin.

That foundation work along with utility work underneath the stadium’s foundation will continue throughout the year, including the first concrete on the project being poured.

Cranes are scheduled to arrive on-site sometime in July, allowing for vertical construction to begin in the coming months.

The A’s said the construction timeline for the project will see the following work carried out in 2025: Concrete work to begin; Tower cranes put into place; First buttress (structure built to support a wall of the building); First concrete column set.

In 2026 Steel work begins; First slab on grade, or concrete foundation placed onto the ground, to be poured; Buttress construction to be completed; Precast work (prebulit concrete sections that mainly support seating areas) to begin.

In 2027: Suite finishings to begin; Structural steel to be topped out; Mega panel (prefabricated exterior wall) to be topped out; First seat set to be installed; Player clubhouses to be completed; Playing field to begin being installed; Completion of suites; Enclosing of the stadium; Completion of playing field installation.

In 2028 Certificate of occupancy awarded by Clark County once stadium is substantially completed; Opening day, marking the A’s and MLB’s official arrival in Las Vegas.
