Guyana football stadium construction start Image: Blue Water Shipping

With the aim to provide international-level facilities to the players, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), in partnership with the transport and logistics company Blue Water Shipping, has initiated steps to create an innovative, new, multipurpose sports, educational and entertainment venue at the Durban Park in Georgetown, Guyana (country in South America).

‘i NEWS GUYANA’ stated that currently, Guyana boasts just two venues for the sport of football: At Providence on the East Bank of Demerara and at Leonora on the West Coast of Demerara.

Georgetown (Guyana)-based the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is the governing body of football in Guyana. It controls the Guyana national football team. The GFF has sanctioned the Elite League as the highest tier of football in the country.

The Blue Water Shipping is a global provider of tailor-made transport and logistics solutions specifically designed to meet the requirements of its clients.

‘i NEWS GUYANA’ further stated that a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the above facility recently. Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony, the Guyana Football Federation President Wayne Forde said he was “overwhelmed to see the initiatives adopted by the Government and the international agencies to streamline the football and the overall sports infrastructure in Guyana”.

Added Forde, “The President of Guyana Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has moved heaven and earth in improving the sporting infrastructure in Guyana, especially the football infrastructure, as the country woefully lacks a proper setup in place for sport. Equal efforts have been put in by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport of Guyana, Charles S. Ramson Jr. The GFF is also working their fingers to the bone with the support of FIFA and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf). The FIFA has been supporting us through their FIFA Forward Programme.”

Miami (US)-based the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) is one of FIFA’s six continental governing bodies for association football.

The FIFA Forward Programme has been built to provide 360-degree, tailor-made support for football development. The aim is to improve the way FIFA develops and supports football across the globe so that football can reach its potential in every single country and everyone who wants to take part can do so without barriers.

Maintained Forde, “The Blue Water Shipping has provided us tremendous support as far as investments in sports is concerned. The GFF-Blue Water Shipping collaboration is huge and the confidence the transport and logistics company has reposed in Guyana as the future sports destination is truly laudable. We have invested a lot in our relationship with the Blue Water Shipping. Together, we have undertaken several projects including the recent Blue Water Shipping Under-15 Girls’ National Championship.”

Remarked Victor Montagliani, Concacaf President, “The GFF President Wayne Forde has put in a lot of efforts to ensure that the above facility work starts rolling and Guyana becomes visible in the football map of the world. His contribution towards the growth of GFF is tremendous and even FIFA has started recognizing it. I doff my hats off to Wayne. The renderings of the above facility look great. It’s a great initiative and bricks and mortar are important. Even Concacaf is building a home of football in the Dominican Republic. We need to give the young players a bright future.”

The Vice-President of Blue Water Shipping Jennifer Falconer spoke about the huge investment which the logistics company is making towards football to nurture young talent – “The above partnership is a historic moment for the Blue Water Shipping and we are happy to be a part of it. For us, it is more than just building a stadium and lending our name to the stadium. It is more about building the dreams of our young athletes and the above venue when it comes to fruition will open up geyser of opportunities for our youngsters. We also hugely support the promotion and growth of women’s football.”

The key features of the design include exterior terraces and stands with panoramic views of Georgetown that will serve as critical space during event days, open design, clear sightlines for all the fans to enjoy the game of soccer to the hilt, and high-tech and sustainable materials for the structure.

The other features of the stadium complex include a dedicated community space which can be utilized year-round for educational opportunities, youth sport, nonprofit events, and other community-related works.
