Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0 in the Copa América Final on July 14th in a match held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida (US) that was delayed for more than an hour because of crowd issues, including fans breaching the security gates.

‘news10.com’ stated that fans without tickets for the July 14th Copa América Final climbed fences and ran past the security more than an hour before the Argentina-Colombia match at the Hard Rock Stadium. The situation forced a delay in the kickoff of the match to 9:15 pm ET.

The CONMEBOL Copa América, often simply called the Copa América, is the top men’s football tournament contested among national teams from South America. It is the oldest still-running continental football competition as well as the third most-watched in the world.

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) is the continental governing body of football in South America and it is one of FIFA’s six continental confederations. The oldest continental confederation in the world its headquarters are located in Luque, Paraguay.

The 65,326-capacity Hard Rock Stadium is a multipurpose stadium located in Miami Gardens, Florida, United States. The stadium is the home field of the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL).

‘news10.com’ further stated that hours before Argentina won its record 16th Copa América title fans got past the gates of the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, one of the host sites for the 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup™, marketed as the FIFA World Cup 26™, will be the 23rd FIFA World Cup™, the quadrennial international men’s soccer championship contested by the national teams of the member-associations of FIFA. The tournament will take place from June 11th-July 19th, 2026. It will be jointly hosted by 16 Cities in three North American countries: Canada, Mexico and the United States. The tournament will be the first hosted by three nations and the first North American World Cup since 1994.

A video posted on social media showed fans, mostly wearing Colombia’s yellow and red colors, jumping over the security railings near the Southwest entrance of the stadium and running past the police officers and the stadium attendants. Screams could be heard in the background.

A handful of people could be seen receiving medical treatment and asking for water in the sweltering South Florida heat. The officers were able to push the crowd behind the gates and lock down the entrance so that no one could get inside although plenty of fans with tickets had already made it to their seats before then.

The security initially appeared to open the gates slightly to allow only a handful of fans in at a time while the other angry attendees pushed against the railings.

After reclosing the gates, the security began letting the fans in slowly around 8:10 pm with the new kickoff time set for 9:15 pm, but the commotion did not stop.

Stadium Statement

The Hard Rock Stadium issued a statement after the game which read, “The Hard Rock Stadium takes pride in hosting world-class events year-round in a safe and successful manner. For the Copa América Final, the venue worked in collaboration with the CONMEBOL, the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) and the local law enforcement agencies. Preparations included an increase in the number of law enforcement officers and security on-hand with more than double the personnel than a typical at-capacity stadium event. Throughout the afternoon and evening there were numerous attempts by the unruly fans without tickets to overpower the security and the law enforcement personnel at the entry points to the stadium thus putting themselves and the other fans and the security and the stadium staff at extreme risk. The various stadium gates were closed and reopened strategically in an attempt to allow the ticketed guests to enter safely and in a controlled manner. The fans continued to engage in illegal conduct – fighting with the police officers, breaking down the walls and the barricades and vandalizing the stadium thus causing significant damage to the property.”

The statement added, “When it became apparent that it would not be safe to start the match at 8 pm, the stadium officials, the CONMEBOL, the Concacaf, and the law enforcement officers communicated and decided to open the stadium gates for a short period of time to all the fans to prevent stampedes and serious injury at the perimeter. The gates were then closed once the threat of the fans being crushed was alleviated. At that time, the venue was at capacity and the gates were not reopened. Shortly after the match started, the alcohol sales were stopped and the event organizers instituted a detailed plan and increased the security presence to allow for a peaceful egress upon the conclusion of the match. We understand there are disappointed ticket holders who were not able to enter the stadium after the perimeter was closed and we will work in partnership with CONMEBOL to address those individual concerns. Ultimately, there is nothing more important than the health and safety of all the guests and the staff and that will always remain our priority. We are grateful to the law enforcement agencies that managed a difficult situation and prioritized the safety of the venue, the players, their families, and the fans. We will continue to work with the law enforcement agencies to identify and hold the criminals accountable who engaged in illegal conduct tonight (July 14th). It is disappointing that a night of celebration was impacted by unlawful and unsafe behavior and we will fully review the processes and protocols in place tonight (July 14th) and will work with the law enforcement agencies to ensure that such an event never happens again.”

Crisis Management in Sporting Events: Lessons from 2024 Copa América Final

A ‘LinkedIn Post By Toni Torres, PR Expert and International Speaker’, read, “It was total chaos at the 2024 Copa América Final between Colombia and Argentina and a crisis situation emerged due to numerous fans without tickets breaching the security gates at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. This incident led to a delay in the start of the match and underlines the significance of meticulous planning and effective communication in the management of large-scale sporting events. Risk management is an important hallmark while organizing mass events and one should be able to foresee the risks. In the Hard Rock Stadium case, complete disorder and confusion reigned supreme due to huge flaws in the ingress control system of the venue and the failure in streamlining the entry of the ticketed fans which paved the way for dozens of fans to enter without tickets thus causing total mayhem which called for the rapid intervention of the authorities concerned. Based on my experience, it is critical that the organizers work in close coordination with all the departments and the relevant authorities that are involved while organizing a mass event and establish robust protocols to prevent such security breaches.”

The ‘LinkedIn Post By Toni Torres, PR Expert and International Speaker’, further stated, “In a crisis situation, clear communication and transparency is vital. The spokesperson of the concerned organization should remain calm and provide accurate information to control the situation and keep everyone involved in the loop. In the Hard Rock Stadium case, the CONMEBOL issued a statement stating that only those with tickets would be allowed to enter and that the match would be delayed by 30 minutes. The various teams managing a mass event should be in sync which is key to the successful holding of an event along with quick response and effective communication. For the public relations and crisis management professionals, the unruly fans incident at the Hard Rock Stadium comes as ‘lessons learned’. This incident highlights the need for foolproof preparation and flawless execution to ensure that the sporting events are held in a safe and secure environment and is a huge success. It is very unfortunate to see this type of an incident occur. In conclusion, the 2024 Copa América Final is not only a sporting spectacle but also an opportunity to reflect on best practices in crisis management and the importance of effective communication while holding large-scale events.”
