The Bundesliga club Hertha BSC has presented details of the planned new stadium in Olympic Park with a steep new grandstand. The new stadium will boast 45,000 seats for national and 36,500 seats for international games.

The ‘kicker’ stated that Hertha BSC Finance Director Ingo Schiller presented details of the planned new stadium in the Olympic Park recently in the Sports Committee meeting of the Berlin House of Representatives for the first time.

Hertha BSC is a German professional football club based in the locality of Westend of the borough of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in Berlin. It plays in Bundesliga, the top tier of the German football league system.

The 74,475-capacity Olympiastadion is a sports stadium at Olympiapark Berlin in Berlin, Germany. It was originally built by Werner March for the 1936 Summer Olympics. During the Olympics, the record attendance was thought to be over 100,000. Today, the stadium is part of the Olympiapark Berlin.

The ‘kicker’ further stated that according to the draft, the new stadium will hold 45,000 spectators, including 17,000 standing and 500 box seats, and could be built on the Lindeneck site on Friedrich-Friesen-Allee. For international games, 36,500 fans can be accommodated. Hertha’s plans for the new building originally envisaged a capacity of 55,000 spectators.

Said Schiller, “We are taking a page out of the 57,000-capacity La Bombonera in Buenos Aires. It’s in the middle of a residential area and has been structurally adapted accordingly. Our stadium would look similar.”

The basic shape of the stadium would no longer be oval. The new stadium, the cost of which Schiller estimated at 250 million euros, would have a “flat” side, based on the ‘La Bombonera’ (‘Candy Box’) stadium in Buenos Aires, which opened in 1940 and was remodeled in the mid-1990s, the home ground of traditional club – Club Atlético Boca Juniors.

The Rominter Allee location on the Olympic site is now definitely off the table for the new building project. Iris Spranger, Berlin’s Senator for Interior, Digitization and Sport, made this clear once again. The club originally wanted to build their venue on the above site. However, this plan came unstuck as a lot of residential houses would have had to be pulled down.

The Lindeneck, located between the Maifeldtribüne and the bell tower, is now the preferred site.

Schiller, who is leaving Hertha at the end of October after 24 years, said before the sports committee that there were plans to continue playing major games in the Olympic Stadium.
