Huge economic boost from Kansas City Chiefs’ new stadium

The NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs’ new stadium development project will generate $8.2 billion in economic impact during its construction, according to a study.

The Chiefs said the the $4.5 billion capital investment project in the State of Kansas includes their new $3 billion stadium in Wyandotte County, Kansas; a $300 million practice facility and headquarters in Olathe, Kansas; as well as $1.2 billion in private ancillary real estate developments surrounding both projects.

Chiefs President Mark Donovan said, “Since Lamar Hunt relocated the team from Dallas to Kansas City in 1963, the franchise has continued to drive significant economic, cultural, and community impact throughout Chiefs Kingdom.

“This once-in-a-generation project – which is really four projects in one – offers a truly transformational impact for the State of Kansas and the entire Kansas City region. This project has real short-term and long-term benefits, and we are excited about what we will be building together over the next five years and beyond.”

The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri (US). The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a Member of the American Football Conference (AFC) West Division.

The 76,416-seat Arrowhead Stadium is an American football stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, United States. It primarily serves as the home venue of the National Football League (NFL) team Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ new stadium is scheduled to open at the start of the 2031 NFL season, marking a transformational milestone for both Chiefs and the region.

The economic report, produced by Econsult Solutions, shows the one-time capital investment of $4.5 billion across all four project elements – stadium, practice facility, and two private real estate development areas – is expected to generate $1.9 billion in indirect impact (business-to-business spending).

It will also generate $1.8 billion in induced impact (spending of wages), for a total impact of $8.2 billion on the greater Kansas City region during the construction period.

In addition, during the construction period, real estate development activities are projected to support 36,500 FTE (full-time equivalent) job-years in the region, with $2.7 billion in employee compensation, and generate $106.4 million in tax revenue for the State of Kansas.

Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson said, “Funding schools in Elkhart, roads in Atchison and everything in between should be done through economic growth and job creation, not raising taxes.

“That is essential to our state’s future, and that is exactly why the Kansas City Chiefs project is so important to Kansas.

“By generating tens of millions of dollars of revenue for the state and creating thousands of Kansas jobs, this project helps place Kansas on solid financial footing for generations to come while lessening the burden on our taxpayers.”

Kansas Speaker of the House Daniel Hawkins said, “We enter into strategic economic partnerships for three fundamental reasons….to grow our economy, create jobs and lessen the burden on Kansas taxpayers.

“The partnership with the Kansas City Chiefs clearly answers the call on each and this study answers a lot of questions that have been raised about the project. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this historic opportunity will have for Kansas today and for generations to come.”

Beginning in 2031, team and stadium operations in Kansas will generate annual economic and fiscal benefits for the greater Kansas City region.

These impacts will be supplemented by the more than one million projected annual patrons for NFL games, concerts, and other special events, which will benefit the local economy, including hotels, food and beverage, retail, and transportation.

Upon the opening of the Kansas City Chiefs’ new stadium and practice facility in 2031, it is projected that team and stadium operational spending and visitor spending will generate $1.5 billion in total direct, indirect, and induced impacts annually for the greater Kansas City region.

This economic activity is expected to support 8,500 FTE (full-time equivalent) jobs and $833.9 million in employee compensation annually on both sides of the state line, while generating $67.0 million in annual tax revenue for the State of Kansas.

“It is bringing millions of visitors to spend and stay here and new revenue that will allow us to fund our roads, sidewalks, public safety and other key services. It is creating an even brighter future for us, our children and grandchildren.”

Mayor of the City of Olathe John Bacon added, “While being home to the Kansas City Chiefs corporate office and training facility is a source of community pride, this study showcases why Olathe entered into this partnership.

“It is bringing hundreds of millions of dollars in investment and thousands of new jobs to our community. This type of economic development and new revenue sources are essential to us continuing to have one of the state’s lowest mill rates for city services.”
