‘Italy clubs should enjoy own home ground’

The Chairman of the Serie A club AC Milan (Italy) Paolo Scaroni said that plans are moving forward for the two Italian professional football clubs – AC Milan and Inter Milan – to relocate from their present home – the San Siro Stadium – and boast their own respective stadiums in order to earn more and more revenues on matchdays.

The ‘Sempre Inter’ quoted Scaroni as stating, “I hope that the stadium proposal gets a nod very soon as two years have passed since the project was presented before the relevant authorities. The need of the hour is that both AC Milan and Inter Milan boast their own home grounds as that help to keep the cash registers jingling on gamedays.”

AC Milan is a professional football club in Milan, Italy, founded in 1899. The club has spent its entire history, with the exception of the 1980-1981 and 1982-1983 seasons, in the top flight of Italian football, known as Serie A, since 1929-1930.

Inter Milan is an Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy. Inter is the only Italian side to have always competed in the top flight of Italian football – Serie A – since its debut in 1909.

San Siro, officially known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, is a football stadium in the San Siro district of Milan, Italy, which is the home of A.C. Milan and Inter Milan. It has a seating capacity of 80,018, making it one of the largest stadiums in Europe, and the largest in Italy.

Scaroni further stated that majority of the European clubs boast their own standalone home venues and even the Serie A club Juventus F.C. – “If Italian clubs can enjoy their own residences, they will be able to keep their coffers full and can compete with Premier League teams.”

The ‘Sempre Inter’ further quoted Scaroni as stating, “Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, Inter Milan and AC Milan made less than €40 million from gameday revenue whereas the Champions League clubs made over €100 million.”

He concluded by stating that most of the stadia outside of Italy are reopening to 100 percent capacity whereas in Italy, venues for the meantime have only been allowed to operate at 50 percent capacity. He hoped that like Germany, France and United Kingdom, even stadia in Italy would be allowed to run full house.
