Pre-qualification programme for construction works at King Salman Stadium Image: Populous

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Sport has invited qualified contracting companies to submit prequalification bids for the preliminary works on the King Salman Stadium in Riyadh, one of the centerpiece venues for the 2034 FIFA World Cup™.

‘mepmiddleeast.com’ stated that the submission deadline is April 28th, 2026, with applications to be sent via email to the designated project address.

The King Salman International Stadium is a planned multipurpose stadium with extensive sports facilities and capability of hosting world-class events which would be the largest within the King Abdulaziz Park Project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the Middle East. One of the 2034 FIFA World Cup™ stadiums it is planned to have a capacity of 92,760 people which would host the Opening and the Final of the greatest soccer show on Earth.

The 2034 FIFA World Cup™ will be the 25th FIFA World Cup™, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the Men’s national teams of the member associations of FIFA. In December 2024, Saudi Arabia was formally confirmed as the host nation by FIFA following an uncontested bidding process. It will be the third tournament hosted in Asia after South Korea and Japan in 2002 and Qatar in 2022. Saudi Arabia will be the second host nation from the Arabian Peninsula in the space of 12 years. It will also be the first time the tournament is hosted by a single nation since 2022 and the first with 48 teams to be held in a single nation.

‘mepmiddleeast.com’ further stated that the scope of the early works covers site preparation and initial construction activities signaling that the project is now firmly moving from design into execution.

A Stadium Built for Scale

Planned in North Riyadh, adjacent to the King Abdulaziz Park, the stadium is being designed by the globally renowned sports architecture firm Populous.

Populous is a global architectural and design practice with regional headquarters in Kansas City (US), London (UK) and Brisbane (Australia) specializing in the sports facilities, the arenas and the convention centers as well as in the planning and design of the major special events.

With a seating capacity exceeding 92,000 it is set to rank among the largest stadiums in the region and serve as a flagship asset within the broader King Abdulaziz Park master development.

The venue has been designed with a strong emphasis on spectator experience and architectural distinction. It will feature a 150-seat Royal Suite, around 120 luxury Sky Boxes and approximately 300 VVIP seats.

A defining architectural element is the stadium’s roof which will incorporate a public walking path offering panoramic views over the King Abdulaziz Park integrating the structure into its surroundings rather than positioning it as a standalone arena.

Beyond hosting the World Cup matches the King Salman Stadium is designed as a multipurpose venue capable of staging major sporting and entertainment events. It is also set to serve as the permanent home ground for the Saudi national football team cementing its long-term role in Saudi Arabia’s sports ecosystem.

Vision 2030’s Sporting Ambition

The stadium forms a key part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to establish itself as a global sports hub under Vision 2030. The Kingdom has committed to developing a network of new and upgraded venues across multiple cities for the 2034 World Cup backed by parallel investments in transport, hospitality and urban infrastructure.

The Saudi Vision 2030 is a Government initiative launched on April 25th, 2016 by the Saudi Government and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy, society and culture.

The industry observers note that the early works tender marks a pivotal moment with the contractors now competing for a role in what is widely regarded as one of the most high-profile stadia builds of the decade.

The interested firms have been advised to refer to the Ministry of Sport’s official media channels for detailed prequalification requirements and questionnaires.
