KSS Design Group has been chosen to design and extensively refurbish the Millennium Building at The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), home of The Championships, Wimbledon.

KSS said that over the years, the practice has cultivated a strong relationship with the All England Club, contributing to several landmark projects.

These include the design of the retractable roof on No.1 Court, upgrades to Centre Court, the creation of mobile shopping kiosks and the redesign of the Umpire’s Chair to mark the 100-year anniversary of Centre Court at Church Road.

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), also known as the All England Club, based at Church Road, Wimbledon, London, England (UK) is a private members’ club. It is best known as the venue for the Wimbledon Championships, the only Grand Slam tennis event still held on grass.

The Wimbledon Championships, commonly called Wimbledon, is a tennis tournament organized by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in collaboration with the Lawn Tennis Association annually in Wimbledon, London (UK).

The Millennium Building is integral to The Championships, acting as a central hub for players, media and Club Members.

Since its original construction more than two decades ago, technological advancements, evolving user expectations and sustainable priorities have reshaped the demands of such a space with a low carbon diagrid glulam roof structure.

KSS said the refurbishment presents an exciting challenge and opportunity to enhance the user experience, requiring a thoughtful balance of modern upgrades, multifunctionality and sustainable design. Key enhancements include:

  • Cutting-edge media facilities, complete with a café, lounges and media courtyard for relaxation
  • A spacious, light-filled central atrium
  • A modern gymnasium for players
  • Enhanced dining areas for players and Members
  • Link to Indoor Tennis Centre to improve accessibility
  • External lawns and terraces

A new upper level will introduce expanded social and dining areas, rooftop terraces and garden, providing elevated spaces for relaxation and interaction.

Aligned with the AELTC’s sustainability strategy, this transformation will play a pivotal role in its ambition to achieve net zero carbon by 2030.

Working with main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, KSS is delivering architecture, interior design and graphic design services for the project.

Work is currently underway, and completion is scheduled for 2027 over three phases ensuring continuity of operations and that the facilities remain available throughout The Championships each year.
