Mexico Azteca Stadium tech-ready for FIFA show

The Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico, will soon boast tech trappings in terms of offering the fans a virtual reality (VR) experience and also to gear up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™.

‘RECORD’ stated that keeping in view the forthcoming 2026 World Cup of which Mexico is also one of the host countries a deal has been struck between the company BeFootball and the ‘Coloso de Santa Úrsula’ (Azteca Stadium) to offer fans a VR experience.

The 83,264-capacity Azteca Stadium is a football stadium located in Coyoacán, Mexico City, Mexico. It is the home venue of Club América as well as the Mexico national football team. The stadium sits at an altitude of 2,200 m above the sea level and is the largest stadium in Latin America and one of the largest in the world.

The Club América is a professional football club based in Mexico City, Mexico. Nicknamed ‘The Eagles’, it competes in the Liga MX, the top tier of Mexican football. The Azteca Stadium serves as their home ground.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup™, marketed as the FIFA World Cup 26™, will be the 23rd FIFA World Cup™, the quadrennial international men’s soccer championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will take place from June 11th-July 19th, 2026. It will be jointly hosted by 16 Cities in three North American countries: Canada, Mexico and the United States. The tournament will be the first hosted by three nations and the first North American World Cup since 1994.

Virtual reality (VR) is a simulated experience that employs 3D near-eye displays and poses tracking to give the user an immersive feel of a virtual world.

The VR experience would boost the in-stadium experience of the fans.

A statement sent out by the stadium authorities read, “Wearing special glasses the fans will be able to step on the field or enter the locker rooms of the Azteca Stadium. The doing away of geographical limits and the border between digital and physical training can also be experienced through different activations in virtual spaces in different venues in Mexico and the United States.”

‘RECORD’ further stated that the Azteca Stadium is presently undergoing renovations to make the arena ready for the FIFA extravaganza. The reconfiguration work is expected to be completed by mid-2025 for fans to enjoy a scintillating experience when they come to watch the opening fixture of the 2026 World Cup at the stadium to be held on June 11th, 2026.
