In a little less than four years Nashville’s East Bank will be the center of the sports world.

‘NASHVILLE BANNER’ stated that on May 19th the National Football League (NFL) owners chose the New Nissan Stadium, currently still under construction, as the site of Super Bowl LXIV (the annual league championship game of the NFL). It will be the first time that Nashville will be hosting the NFL’s marquee event.

The game will be played on February 10th, 2030, and will serve as one of the first significant tests for the East Bank’s infrastructure, amenities and facilities which are the result of significant Metro and State investment on that side of the Cumberland River.

The 60,000-seat New Nissan Stadium is an indoor multipurpose stadium under construction in Nashville, Tennessee (US). Scheduled to open in the summer of 2027 it is to replace the 69,143-capacity Nissan Stadium as the home venue for the National Football League (NFL) team Tennessee Titans.

New York (US)-based the National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league in the United States. Composed of 32 teams it is divided equally between the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The NFL is one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada and the highest professional level of American football in the world.

New Nissan Stadium

The above announcement fulfills the promise behind the new stadium, a domed facility costing more than $2 billion. While it has a smaller seating capacity than the Nissan Stadium, which opened in 1999, the New Nissan Stadium will feature modern seating options and expansive concourses as well as significantly more elevators and escalators than the current venue. Plus, the enclosed roof creates the opportunity to host some of the world’s largest sporting events which heretofore were beyond the grasp of a city that has shown it can create distinctive and profitable experiences around such events.

‘Distinctly Music City’

Asserted Deana Ivey, Nashville Convention and Visitors Corporation President-cum-head honcho, “Hosting the Super Bowl is a defining moment for Nashville and Tennessee and reflects years of work to build ‘Music City’ into a globally recognized destination for music, entertainment and live events. This event is an incredible opportunity to showcase the dynamic and creative character of Nashville to a global audience and to deliver a Super Bowl experience that is distinctly Music City, where music, sports, culture, and hospitality come together in a way few cities can match.”

While the NFL reaps the largest financial benefit from its showcase contest the host city generates revenue through sales, hospitality and gas taxes.

Economic Impact

‘NASHVILLE BANNER’ further stated that construction of the new stadium, which kicked off the redevelopment of the East Bank, began in February 2024 and is on schedule for completion in February 2027. The Tennessee Titans will take control of the facility at that time and will stage concerts and other events there to assess its functionality and to identify any issues that must be addressed before the first NFL game is played there that fall.

Overall, even conservative estimates of the Super Bowl’s economic impact number in the hundreds of millions. Some estimate that it can exceed $1 billion overall.

Exulted Amy Adams Strunk, Titans Controlling Owner, “We are thrilled that the New Nissan Stadium will host Nashville’s first Super Bowl in 2030. This is an exciting moment for our city and our entire State. We cannot wait for our community to experience an event of this magnitude.”

Fan Experience

Historically, the expectation was that a stadium must have a capacity of 70,000 or more to be considered a potential Super Bowl site. The NFL has backed away from that requirement in recent years and has focused more on the fan experience in the stadium. The New Nissan Stadium will have a capacity of slightly more than 60,000 but will offer a sizable number of standing-room-only tickets that can increase capacity as needed.

Sports Destination

Nashville has become an increasingly popular national sports destination over the last decade. The NFL’s view of the city changed when the 2019 Draft set an attendance record with a three-day total of 600,000, more than double the previous mark, as the Lower Broadway honky tonk vibe expanded into the streets. That record has since been broken multiple times as the other sites used the template established by Nashville and built upon it.

There is little concern about whether Nashville and Middle Tennessee can be an effective and distinctive Super Bowl site. The larger issue is whether the 2030 contest will be a one-off in recognition of the new stadium or whether the city can join the league’s regular rotation of Super Bowl sites which is largely composed of cities in the South and West. New Orleans and Miami each have hosted 11 Super Bowls followed by the greater Los Angeles area (eight times), Tampa, Florida (five times) and Atlanta and Phoenix (four times apiece).

‘Mark of Success’

Said Bill Haslam, former Tennessee Governor, who is also the Chairman of the Board of Music City Major Events Inc., “Many years ago our leaders implemented a long-term strategy to grow our economy by encouraging more visitors to come to Tennessee. Because sales tax is our primary method of paying for vital Government services hosting large-scale events that attract the visitors is a great way to show off our wonderful State and help our communities that rely on tourism as a source of job creation and growth. Hosting the Super Bowl is a great mark of the success of that strategy.”

A Much-needed Win

The news of the New Nissan Stadium hosting the Super Bowl cast a bright light on the Titans at a time when most see the franchise as flailing. Since the start of the 2022 season they have fired two General Managers (GMs) and two Head Coaches. They have not won a playoff game since 2019, have not been to the postseason since 2021 and have finished tied for the NFL’s worst record each of the last two years.

The Titans are one of 12 NFL franchises that have never won a Super Bowl. Their only appearance in that game came during the 1999 season, their first with the current Nissan Stadium as their home field.

Remarked Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner, “The 2019 NFL Draft in Nashville was one of the greatest fan events in our history. The Super Bowl LXIV at the new stadium is the next step in this remarkable football journey.”
