As the Serie A team SS Lazio continue to make progress on their plans to renovate their former home ground – the Stadio Flaminio in Rome (Italy) – in the meanwhile they have sent the documents requested by the Municipality of Rome in this context. The revamp work will be hugely inspired by the works of the Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi.

The Background

‘THELAZIALI.COM’ stated that the ‘Biancocelesti’ have revealed interest in the currently-defunct facility as their desired home for the future. While the current ground has fallen into disrepair the club is evincing keen interest to reconstruct the stadium and build the other facilities encircling it to make it a year-round hub for the Lazio supporters.

The SS Lazio is an Italian professional sports club based in Rome, (Italy). It plays in the Serie A, the highest level of the Italian football league system, and have spent most of their history in the top tier of Italian football.

The Stadio Olimpico, colloquially known as the l’Olimpico (The Olympic), is an Italian multipurpose sports venue located in Rome. It has the capacity to accommodate 70,634 spectators. It is the largest sports facility in Rome and the second-largest in Italy after Milan’s 80,018-capacity San Siro Stadium.

The now-closed 24,973-capacity Stadio Flaminio is a stadium in Rome (Italy). It lies along the Via Flaminia (ancient Roman Road), three kilometers Northwest of the City Centre, and 300 meters away from the Parco di Villa Glori (City Park in Rome).

‘Beautiful’ Project

‘THELAZIALI.COM’ further stated that the SS Lazio President Claudio Lotito had already presented the club’s plans to the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, who termed it as a ‘beautiful’ project. However, the club was required to follow up on the same by sending the necessary documents and they finally did so recently as confirmed by the Municipality of Rome.

Following the above the Sports Department of Roma Capitale received, via certified email from the SS Lazio, the documentation required for the entire exercise in regard to the redevelopment, modernization and expansion of the Stadio Flaminio (pursuant to Article 4 of the Legislative Decree No. 38 of 2021).

In the coming days the relevant Municipal offices will carefully analyze and assess the dossier received in order to officially get rolling the project by activating the preliminary conference services.

While Lotito and the people involved in the project will be hoping for a green light in the coming days or weeks the outline of the project has been revealed which saw its estimated total cost soar from €432 million to €480 million. The plans include a 50,570-seat stadium, a Lazio museum and more than 4,400 parking spaces.

Pier Luigi Nervi Touch

The City of Rome will remain the sole owner of the ground but the ‘le Aquile’ are aiming to acquire the rights to manage the ‘pre-existing’ structure for 90 years. The original stadium was designed by the famous Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi (1891-1978) and Lotito stated that the renovated ground will remain true to his style.

Pier Luigi Nervi was an Italian Engineer and Architect. He studied at the University of Bologna graduating in 1913. Nervi taught as a Professor of Engineering at the Rome University from 1946 to 1961 and was known as a Structural Engineer and Architect and was also known for his innovative use of reinforced concrete, especially with numerous notable thin shell structures worldwide.

The above project was developed by drawing inspiration from the works of Pier Luigi Nervi himself and the possible expansion of the 47,282-capacity Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence (another venue designed by Nervi) will also take a leaf out of the Nervi book. The projects will be imprinted with large footprints of Nervi.
