Plaza area at Children's Mercy Park to be developed ahead of World Cup Image: Sporting Kansas City and Populous

Sporting Kansas City is making major upgrades to enhance the fan experience at Children’s Mercy Park ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Eticketing said that alongside Populous and Turner Construction, the club will soon begin construction on a 90,000-square-foot fan plaza outside the stadium’s main entrance.

Designed to house 9,000 fans, the space will serve as a vibrant hub for gatherings at the stadium, which will host six matches during the 2026 World Cup.

Sporting Kansas City is an American professional soccer club based in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The club competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference. The team has played its home matches at Children’s Mercy Park since 2011.

Children’s Mercy Park is a soccer-specific stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, United States. It is located near Kansas Speedway, on the far west side of Wyandotte County, Kansas. The stadium has a seating capacity of 18,467, which can expand to 25,000 for concerts.

The work on the new plaza is scheduled for conclusion by May 1 next year and it will be ready for FIFA World Cup 2026 watch parties and related festivities.

The project comprises a new videoboard, a big stage, enhanced entry gates, and a ‘Champions Walk’ sidewalk celebrating Sporting KC’s achievements.

The plaza is not just an amenity; it’s a strategic speculation in Kansas City’s future. Positioning it as a leading destination for global soccer fans during the FIFA World Cup 2026 and beyond.

Daktronics, a renowned leader in microelectronic scoreboards and digital displays, will supply the cutting-edge video system for the plaza.

The addition of a large-scale videoboard is essential for the FIFA World Cup 2026. It will allow fans who do not have match tickets to gather for live public screenings.

These watch parties are expected to attract international friends and local supporters alike, creating a vibrant and inclusive World Cup atmosphere.

Rob Thomson, Chief Infrastructures Officer for Sporting KC confirmed that the total cost of the project is close to eight figures.

Funding has been secured from both state resources and private investors. Thomson emphasized the aim of having the plaza fully active well ahead of the contest, positioning it as a central hub for celebrations, media events, and fan parties.

The trio of Populous, Turner Construction, and Sporting KC is no stranger to major development projects. They worked on the $200 million Children’s Mercy Park which is now considered one of the most advanced soccer-specific stadiums in North America.

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 drawing closer, this new project serves as a natural evolution in Kansas City’s evolution as a soccer destination.

Their joint efforts also comprise the $75 million Compass Minerals National Performance Center, which opened in 2018.

This 50-acre facility serves not only as the primary exercise complex for Sporting KC but also as a key venue for the U.S. Men’s National Team.

The synergy between high-performance training and elite competition underscores Kansas City’s readiness for the FIFA World Cup 2026 on both operational and infrastructural levels.
