Development work is about to start on transforming the blustery site of the former Candlestick Park ballpark in San Francisco into one of the Bay Area’s largest master-planned neighborhoods.

Perkins&Will said that more than a decade after the demolition of Candlestick Park, the former stadium of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers, the iconic site is entering its next era.

This September, FivePoint Holdings plans to break ground on the first phase of a 270-acre development, which will ultimately deliver more than 7,200 homes, offices, shops, and parks on the former Candlestick Park site.

San Francisco’s Candlestick Park was widely considered baseball’s worst stadium before it was demolished in 2015.

The oblong structure churned up powerful gusts coming off the Bay, leading fans to wear parkas to games even on summer evenings.

Perkins&Will has helped shape the master plan for the Candlestick Center Innovation District, creating a vision for a vibrant and walkable hub of employment, entertainment, recreation, and housing.

Designed with flexibility in mind, the plan supports a mix of uses that can adapt to evolving market needs while thoughtfully orienting buildings to maximize views of the San Francisco Bay.

Candlestick Park was an outdoor stadium located in the Hunters Point area of San Francisco, California, United States.

It was the home of Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants, who played there beginning in 1960 through 1999. It was also the home field of the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League from 1971 through 2013, after which the team moved to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

The San Francisco Giants are an American professional baseball team based in San Francisco. The Giants compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West Division.

The Giants play at the 43,000 capacity Oracle Park ballpark in the South Beach neighborhood of San Francisco, California, United States.

Candlestick Park stadium was also used for live musical performances. The Beatles famously gave their last full public concert at Candlestick Park on August 29, 1966.

The last event held at Candlestick was a concert by Paul McCartney in August 2014. The demolition of the stadium was completed in September 2015.

The stadium was situated at Candlestick Point on the western shore of San Francisco Bay.
