Argentina River Plate Stadium renovation finalized Image: River Plate Buenos Aires

Argentina soccer giants River Plate unveiled their revamped Monumental Stadium recently after an 11-month facelift exercise.

Club Atlético River Plate is a professional Argentine sports club based in the Nuñez neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The football team is one of the most successful in Argentina, having won the Primera División (top division of the Argentine football league system) professional title a record 36 times. The club has also won eight National cups.

The 70,074-capacity El Monumental is a stadium in Belgrano, Buenos Aires, Argentina, home of the football club River Plate.

‘XINHUA NET’ reported that work included the removal of the venue’s athletics track and barbed wire fencing, building new restaurants and restrooms for fans and the implementation of a free high-speed Wi-Fi system.

The refurbishment work also included the installation of a new pitch with hybrid technology that allows the ball to move faster and quickly removes excess water.

‘XINHUA NET’ quoted former Argentina international midfielder Marcelo Gallardo as stating, “It’s perfect. It’s the football pitch that we wanted.”

In the second stage of the rehabilitation work – for which a timetable is yet to be confirmed – the stadium’s capacity will increase from 74,000 to 80,000 fans.

Located in the northern Buenos Aires neighborhood of Nunez, El Monumental was the venue for Argentina’s 3-1 victory over the Netherlands in the 1978 World Cup final.

In August last year, the Buenos Aires giant announced plans to utilize the COVID-19 period to revamp its stadium, with the long-term goal of bringing fans closer to the pitch action.

The club claims that through the renovations, River’s players will now enjoy the best playing field in South America due to the hybrid technology pitch. The irrigation system has also been improved, while the athletics track separating the pitch from the stands has been removed and a new players’ tunnel set up.

A statement on the ‘River Plate’ website stated, “Thousands of fans who go to every match will be able to use the Wi-Fi service in each and every grandstand and it will be available for every single spectator. The equipment’s physical setup was carried out at the stadium’s access points, the grandstands, the box corridors, the car park, the River Museum, the cafeteria, and the micro stadium.”

The ‘River Plate’ website added, “Improvements have been made in the seating area for wheelchair users The works were carried out in the medium and lower Belgrano grandstands, improving accessibility for fans who attend matches at the Monumental Stadium. The sector was remodeled and improved in several ways: First, the uneven and dilapidated asphalt pavement was demolished and removed. Then, the corridors and lower bleachers were made waterproof (layer beneath the pavement). Thus, leaks will also be prevented in the stadium’s inner ring and in the classrooms which belong to the school area. Apart from that, the stadium’s original concrete structure also stays protected. Finally, a new pathway was built with lightweight concrete and given a smooth and non-slip finish to increase the comfort and safety quotient of wheelchair users who attend the fixtures.”

The club has invested ARS200m (£1.6m/€1.85m/$2.24m) in the works, with further development planned.

El Monumental is one of Argentina’s leading stadia and River has called it home since 1938. The stadium is due to be one of the host venues for Argentina and Colombia’s co-hosting of the 2021 Copa América.

The 2021 Copa América will be the 47th edition of the Copa América, the international men’s football championship organized by South America’s football ruling body CONMEBOL. The tournament will take place in Colombia and Argentina from June 11th to July 10th, 2021.
