The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) in Malaysia will now be known as the Petronas Sepang International Circuit, after the inking of a three-year naming rights partnership with the national oil and gas giant.

‘malaymail’ stated that the announcement came just in time before the 2023 Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia (MotoGP Malaysia) which was held from November 10th-12th at the circuit.

The 130,000-capacity Sepang International Circuit, currently known as the Petronas Sepang International Circuit for commercial reasons, is a motorsport race track in Sepang, Selangor, Malaysia. It is located approximately 45 km South of Kuala Lumpur, and close to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)-based Petronas, short for Petroliam Nasional Berhad, is a Malaysian oil and gas company. It was established in 1974 and has a presence in over 100 countries. Petronas is the custodian of Malaysia’s national oil and gas resources.

The Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia is a round of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Championship.

FIM is the global governing body for motorcycle racing and is based in Mies, Switzerland.

‘malaymail’ further stated that the SIC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Azhan Shafriman Hanif believes the partnership will bring more impact to the racing landscape, and more brands will take advantage of the added value to their businesses and customers.

He said the partnership represents the shared vision of commitment to excellence, innovation and delivering exceptional experiences to local and international fans as well as visitors to further elevate the stature of Malaysia as a destination for sports and entertainment -“This development shall open doors to new opportunities to host more world-class events at our world-class venue for Petronas as one of the industry leaders in motorsports through its engagements in Formula 1 and MotoGP.”

Meanwhile, the Petronas Senior General Manager of Group Strategic Relations and Communications Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz said she is honored to embark into the new partnership, an investment that represents the pinnacle of their longstanding relationship and commitment to support the growth of sports and entertainment industry in Malaysia – “This partnership goes beyond just naming rights – it signifies our dedication to promoting world-class events, fostering talent development and showcasing our nation’s capabilities on a global stage.”

In March this year, Petronas announced a three-year sponsorship with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), to boost the performance of national shuttlers, especially in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

As part of the deal, Petronas’ logo is prominently positioned on the national team jerseys, while the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara is known as Petronas ABM (sports complex in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is the governing body of badminton in Malaysia. BAM was established in Kuala Lumpur on November 11th, 1934 under the name of Badminton Association of Malaya. The association was founded in 1964 and has 15 States as their members.

The 2024 Summer Olympics, and commonly known as Paris 2024, is a forthcoming international multisport event scheduled to take place from July 26th-August 11th, 2024 in France, with Paris as the main Host City and 16 other Cities spread across metropolitan France, plus one subsite in Tahiti – an island within the French overseas country and overseas collectivity of French Polynesia.
