PSV Eindhoven upgrades LED board at Philips Stadium Image: Philips

Football giant PSV Eindhoven has teamed up with PPDS, the exclusive global provider of Philips Professional Displays and Complementary Solutions, to upgrade fan experiences inside its iconic 35,000 capacity Philips Stadion at Eindhoven, Netherlands, with the installation of four new cutting-edge outdoor direct-view light emitting diode (dvLED) scoreboards.

‘PPDS’ stated that one of Dutch football’s most successful teams boasting proud local and domestic records including 26 league titles and several Union of European Football Association (UEFA) and European Cups, PSV Eindhoven’s association with Philips – a company founded in Eindhoven in 1891 – is now entering its 113th year with the club originally formed by the Philips employees in 1913.

The Philips Sport Vereniging, abbreviated as PSV and internationally known as PSV Eindhoven, is a Dutch sports club from Eindhoven, Netherlands. It is best known for its professional football team which has played in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football, since its inception in 1956.

The Philips Stadion is a football stadium in Eindhoven, Netherlands. As the home of PSV Eindhoven it is also known as the PSV Stadion. With a capacity of 35,000 it is the third-largest football stadium in Netherlands.

PPDS is the trading name of TP Vision Europe B.V. (‘TP Vision’) and MMD-Monitors and Displays Nederland B.V. (‘MMD’) registered in the Netherlands with their head offices in Amsterdam. TP Vision and MMD are the wholly-owned subsidiaries of TPV Technology Limited (‘TPV’), the world’s largest manufacturer of monitors and a leading provider of display solutions.

The PPDS exclusively markets and sells Philips-branded professional displays covering professional televisions (TVs), signage and direct view LED solutions worldwide under trademark license by Koninklijke Philips N.V. By combining the Philips brand promise with TPV’s manufacturing expertise in displays the PPDS employs a competitive and focused approach to bring innovative products to the market – from its 10” touchscreen through to unlimited direct view LED displays. Designing solutions that make a positive impact, both for the resellers and for the end customers – at the right time and in the right places.

Philips is a Dutch multinational health technology and former consumer electronics company that was founded in Eindhoven in 1891. Since 1997, its world headquarters is situated in Amsterdam (Netherlands) though the Benelux headquarters is still in Eindhoven.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of the six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach football in Europe and the transcontinental countries of Russia (suspended), Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan as well as the West Asian countries of Cyprus, Armenia and Israel. The UEFA consists of 55 national association members. After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine the FIFA and the UEFA suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.

‘PPDS’ further stated that the above longstanding relationship is also recognized by the Guinness World Records as the longest sponsorship partnership in sports history reflected in the club’s stadium branding and on team shirts.

Seeking new ways to deliver an enhanced matchday and event experience the Philips Stadion management team decided it was time to upgrade its existing scoreboards – which had been in place for 12 years – taking advantage of the latest advancements in screen technology.

Having previously upgraded the club’s corporate areas with an array of Philips signage and interactive displays the PSV Eindhoven once again approached the PPDS, who together with the local audio-visual (AV) and technical specialist, Mansveld Techniek, managed the project.

Completed in just three weeks the stadium’s four existing scoreboards were replaced with four new 8m x 4.5m Philips Urban LED 6000 Series displays.

Tailored to meet the exact needs of PSV Eindhoven’s AV/information technology (IT), the Philips Urban LED 6000 Series boasts a 6.67 pixel pitch and 10,000 nits (screen brightness unit) of brightness – an epic five times step up from the previous 16 pixel pitch while also doubling the original 5,000 nits.

Each wall delivers high contrast and high refresh rates of 7680hz for smooth visual reproduction – including live broadcasting – with more color subtlety, shading and saturation.

Each wall is strategically placed for the fans with up to 30-meter viewing distances rather than the more traditional two videowalls positioned at each end of the stadium. This ensures optimum viewing experiences for the fans located anywhere in the stadium.

The new Philips Urban LED 6000 Series offers low power consumption of just 18kw bringing immediate cost of ownership savings when compared to each of the original walls’ 23kw power consumption.

With inclement weather in Europe the Philips Urban LED 6000 Series walls inside the stadium can withstand anything Mother Nature throws their way with the reassurance of an IP65 rating – resistant to water and potentially hazardous or corrosive airborne pollutants – and uncompromised performance in subzero conditions down to -20°C (-4°F) or extreme temperatures of up to 50°C (122°F).

Commented Sjors van den Boogaart, Director of Philips Stadion, “After more than a decade of service our displays have made way for the new LED walls in the Philips Stadion delivering a huge leap in image quality and brightness which perfectly aligns with our ambitions for innovation. The fans now experience sharper visuals while installations continue to support dynamic and impactful content.”

Added Koen Vroomen, Sales Manager Benelux at PPDS, “Continuing PPDS’ enviable association and affiliation in designing and providing tailored dvLED solutions to some of the world’s leading professional teams – with the LaLiga team FC Barcelona (Spain), the Oracle Red Bull Racing (the Formula 1 team based in the UK) and the Harlequins RFC ( the professional rugby union club based in Twickenham, London, UK) among those made public – we were delighted to be part of this exciting project. When Philips was established in 1891 it was with a vision to bring cost-effective electrical innovations to the world. What better way to celebrate that vision than by bringing the latest outdoor Philips LED innovation back into the Philips Stadion and continuing to showcase high performance and innovation to the world.”
