The Eindhoven Council has greenlighted plans to expand the reigning Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven’s home ground – the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, Netherlands – by 10,000 seats.

‘FLASHSCORE’ stated that PSV announced recently that both the parties had signed a letter of intent which translates to the fact that the club, the Mayor and the Alderman have approved of the plan to expand the Philips Stadium by “at least” 10,000 seats. The Philips Stadion currently has a capacity to accommodate 35,000 spectators.

Philips Sport Vereniging, abbreviated as the PSV and internationally known as the PSV Eindhoven, is a Dutch sports club from Eindhoven, Netherlands. It is best known for its professional football department which has played in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football, since its inception in 1956.

The Philips Stadion is a football stadium in Eindhoven, Netherlands. It is also known as the PSV Stadion and serves as the home of the PSV Eindhoven. With a capacity to hold 35,119 spectators it is the third-largest football stadium in the country.

‘FLASHSCORE’ further stated that the PSV expects the expansion works to start in 2027.

Observed Jeroen Dijsselbloem, Eindhoven Mayor, “The City is growing and with it there is a growing demand for places of recreation, culture and sport. The waiting list best demonstrates the fact that the Philips Stadion is in dire need of expansion. The fans will be happy with the rise in the capacity of the stadium to 10,000.”

The expansion means that PSV will not leave the Philips Stadion which has been the club’s home since its founding in 1910.

Stated Stijn Steenbakkers, Alderman, “A capacity rise of the Philips Stadion is more than just an investment in PSV and football. Because it’s not just about extra seats but also about more stories, memories, dynamism, and solidarity. All those red and white shirts you see walking around on matchdays, those images and that feeling, that’s priceless.”

Complex Construction

PSV Director Marcel Brands stated that the expansion exercise of the Philips Stadion will be a complex one – “Research shows that this is the best location to go in for expansion. It has been an iconic location for over 112 years. The initial plan is to expand the North stand. However, we will examine all the four stands to gauge what’s possible. I was very happy with the outcome of the research. It started here, at the Philips Stadion. This is the DNA of the club. It’s still a beautiful and modern stadium that we want to improve. Most important is that we get to serve more fans. We have a waiting list of 20,000 people. The region is growing enormously so we want to take the next step. Capacity expansion means extra revenue on which we are presently restricted and it will also help the top-flight to grow further.”

Brands say PSV want to finish the expansion before 2030. The club will not temporarily relocate to another stadium during the construction period.
