The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has invested in electrical infrastructure as part of the Principality Stadium renovation project.

RSK said the work is one of several initiatives it is carrying out with the WRU to enhance operational safety and future-proof one of Europe’s most iconic sporting and entertainment venues.

RSK Group company CX Energy acted as principal contractor and worked closely with the WRU to future-proof the stadium’s high voltage electrical system.

This phase of the Principality Stadium renovation project included the replacement of four substations at the end of their lives with new plant, including high voltage switchgear, transformers and low voltage switchgear, which form the package substations.

CX Energy project manager Jack Morriss said: “The upgrades to the Principality Stadium will improve resilience and reliability through the addition of modern protective systems and feature the latest metering systems to measure power consumption.

“Ultimately, this will future-proof the electrical infrastructure of this iconic sporting and entertainment venue for the next 25 years.”

Works took place over the course of a month, during which no events were held at the stadium.

Morriss added: “Carrying out major electrical work like this – the stadium’s most complex project since construction – is an involved process that requires a coordinated series of high-voltage shutdowns.

“Within such a high-profile venue with a busy events calendar this was a challenge and so work was timed to complete between fixtures.

“Substations were replaced in a staged manner to minimise disruption, as essential maintenance staff still needed to access the grounds and the club’s administrative offices still needed to function.”

All the substation work was complete at the end of January, allowing two weeks for testing before the first fixture of the 2026 Six Nations tournament at the stadium in February.

The Principality Stadium, originally called the Millennium Stadium, was first built to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup. It is the Welsh national stadium and is home to the Wales national rugby union teams.

RSK Group companies Nature Positive and Copper Consultancy are also working with WRU to update an environmental and social strategy.

Mark Williams, Principality Stadium Manager, said: “Principality Stadium hosts a diverse range of major events, including international rugby fixtures, football finals, boxing championships, motorsport and sports entertainment shows such as WWE’s Clash at the Castle.

“Its retractable roof and adaptable layout also makes it a ‘must-visit, must-play’ concert venue for some of the world’s biggest music artists, hosting Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Billy Joel, Taylor Swift and the Oasis reunion in recent years.

“With a busy summer schedule in ’26 and ’27, the stadium is also host to the upcoming UEFA Cup in 2028. These infrastructure upgrades will ensure the stadium can operate at its best with stronger reliability and better capacity to make use of innovative and renewable technologies.”

To mark its 25th anniversary in 2025, major infrastructure upgrades took place as part of the Principality Stadium renovation project.

A new roof walk attraction was added, as well as advanced LED lighting (Musco Show-Light), and enhanced Wi-Fi/LAN connectivity.

Key improvements also included a faster, contactless, and smart-gate entry system with 117 turnstiles, enhancing fan flow, security, and reducing stewarding pressure.
