Protracted San Siro Stadium redevelopment silver lining

The long-running San Siro Stadium (Milan, Italy) redevelopment project has taken another significant step forward after the Milan officials outlined a clearer construction timeline. The new San Siro Stadium construction is planned for summer 2027.

‘FOOTBALL GROUND GUIDE’ stated that for the first time there is now a firm target in place as regards when work on the new stadium could begin.

Realistic Roadmap

After being mired in years of delays, legal challenges and uncertainty the San Siro Stadium project finally appears to have a realistic roadmap.

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, commonly known as the San Siro Stadium, is a football stadium in the San Siro district of Milan, Italy. The venue has a seating capacity of 75,817 making it the largest stadium in Italy and one of the largest stadiums in Europe. It is the home stadium of AC Milan and Inter Milan who compete in Serie A – the top tier of Italian football.

The new San Siro Stadium is a planned €1.2 billion modern arena intended to replace the historic ⁠San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy. The AC Milan and the Inter Milan are spearheading the project to build a state-of-the-art facility next to their current ground.

Collaboration Agreement

‘FOOTBALL GROUND GUIDE’ further stated that plans for the AC Milan and the Inter Milan’s new San Siro Stadium have moved forward after the Municipality of Milan and the Lombardy Region approved a collaboration agreement designed to accelerate the project.

Authorization Procedures

The agreement will coordinate the planning and environmental approval processes required for the redevelopment of the San Siro area and to complete all authorization procedures by summer 2027.

The Deputy Mayor of Milan Anna Scavuzzo has confirmed that the city is working towards ensuring that construction begins in the second half of 2027 provided the remaining approvals are completed on schedule.

The proposed 71,500-seat stadium, designed by the architectural firms Foster + Partners and Manica, will become the new home of both the AC Milan and the Inter Milan before the existing San Siro Stadium is partially demolished.

Wider Regeneration

The redevelopment also includes the construction of a new Patroclus tunnel and wider regeneration of the surrounding district as part of the First Phase of the project.

London (UK)-based Foster + Partners is a global studio for architecture, urbanism and design all rooted in sustainability and founded by Norman Foster in 1967. Since then, he and the team around him have established an international practice with a worldwide reputation.

Implementation Plan

The clubs’ development company, Stadio San Siro Spa, submitted its implementation plan earlier this year with environmental assessments and technical reviews now continuing ahead of a final decision.

The Stadio San Siro Spa is a special-purpose company jointly and equally owned by Milan’s rival football clubs – the AC Milan and the Inter Milan. The corporate entity was established to acquire the historic ⁠San Siro Stadium area and manage its massive multiyear urban redevelopment project.

On Track

The city officials have also linked the timetable to Milan’s ambition to host matches during Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) EURO 2032 with the Deputy Mayor Scavuzzo stating that the Municipality will seek to bring forward its work wherever possible to keep the project on track.

Important Milestone

While several approvals still need to be secured having a targeted construction start in the second half of 2027 is an important milestone.

There is still plenty of work ahead before the first shovel goes into the ground but the latest update gives the supporters and both clubs a much clearer idea of when one of Europe’s most anticipated stadium projects could finally become a reality.

The 2032 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Football Championship, commonly referred to as the UEFA EURO 2032 or simply EURO 2032, will be the 19^th UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international football championship organized by the UEFA for the senior Men’s national teams of its Member associations. Italy and Türkiye will host the tournament which is expected to take place between June and July 2032.
