San Siro Stadium venue for Winter Olympics

The Milan (Italy) Mayor Giuseppe Sala said on October 29^th that the opening ceremony for the 2026 Winter Olympics will be held at the San Siro Stadium.

The ‘ESPN’ stated that together with the Serie A clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan, Sala is moving ahead with plans to build a new stadium in the City (Milan). But he said after a meeting with representatives from both clubs that “no matter the timing of when the new stadium will be built, the opening ceremony for the 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in the current stadium, as a tribute to its glorious history”.

The 2026 Winter Olympics, officially the XXV Olympic Winter Games and also known as Milano Cortina 2026, are an upcoming international multisport event scheduled to take place from February 6^th to February 22^nd, 2026 in the Italian Cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The ‘ESPN’ further stated that the closing ceremony for 2026 is scheduled for Verona Arena, a large Roman amphitheater.

Sala informed that both clubs have agreed to his guidelines for building a new stadium and that he will ask the City Council to “rapidly” move ahead with the plans.

The AC Milan is a professional football club in Milan, Italy, founded in 1899. The club has spent its entire history, with the exception of the 1980-1981 and 1982-1983 seasons, in the top flight of Italian football, known as Serie A since 1929-1930.

Inter Milan is an Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy. Inter is the only Italian side to have always competed in the top flight of Italian football since its debut in 1909.

The San Siro Stadium serves as the residence of both AC Milan and Inter Milan. San Siro is a football stadium in the San Siro district of Milan, Italy. It has a seating capacity of 80,018, making it one of the largest stadiums in Europe, and the largest in Italy.

The Verona Arena is a Roman amphitheater in Piazza Bra in Verona, Italy, built in 30 AD. It is still in use today and is internationally famous for the large-scale opera performances given there. It is one of the best preserved ancient structures of its kind. In ancient times, the arena’s capacity was nearly 30,000. The stage for concerts and opera performances decreases the available places to a maximum of 15,000. It will be used as the closing ceremony venue for the 2026 Winter Olympics and two weeks later will be used for the Opening Ceremony for the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
