Santiago Bernabéu Metro Stadion unveiled Image: Real Madrid

The LaLiga team Real Madrid CF (Spain) and the Community of Madrid recently struck a deal aimed at modernizing the Santiago Bernabéu Metro Station. The agreement was reached at a ceremony graced by the Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez and Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid.

‘Realmadrid’ stated that the project endeavors to raise the capacity of the Santiago Bernabéu Metro Station so that it can cater to higher passenger traffic volume, especially on a matchday at the Real Madrid home – the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, Spain. The development also aims to improve the areas skirting the facility and lending a futuristic touch to the Metro Station with the Real Madrid “immersive feel”.

Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, commonly referred to as Real Madrid, is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid, Spain. Founded in 1902 as the Madrid Football Club, the club has traditionally worn a white home kit since its inception.

The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is a football stadium in Madrid, Spain. With a current seating capacity of 81,044, it has been the home stadium of Real Madrid since its completion in 1947. It is the second-largest stadium in Spain and third-largest home to a top-flight European club after the 99,354-capacity Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain, and the 81,365-capacity Westfalenstadion in Dortmund, Germany.

The Community of Madrid is one of the 17 autonomous communities of Spain. It is located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, and of the Central Plateau. Its capital and largest municipality is the City of Madrid, which is also the capital of Spain.

Santiago Bernabéu is a Metro Station on Line 10 of the Madrid Metro. It is located in Fare Zone A. It is located next to the Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The station was opened on June 10th, 1982 shortly before the 1982 FIFA World Cup™, which Spain was hosting.

Emphasizing on the importance of the above deal, President Florentino Pérez stated, “The deal will help both Real Madrid and the Community of Madrid work in tandem on the future renovation and expansion of the iconic Metro Station which is an important communication mode and very close to our hearts. The new Station will be state-of-the-art and will boast cutting-edge technology and will make Real Madrid and the Community of Madrid proud. The revamp work will see the Station connected to the high-speed railway and the airport, and it will act as a gateway to Madrid for millions of people from all corners of the world who visit Spain as well as Madrid for leisure and other purposes.”

Added Pérez, “The Metro Station repurposing work forms a part of the greater Santiago Bernabéu Stadium transformation plans and the area in the immediate vicinity of the venue. The redevelopment work will aim to improve the quality of lives of the community on which the stadium sits. The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is the identity of Madrid. Ever since it opened on December 14th, 1947 it has been an integral part of the lives of the people of this City. A lot of people’s aspirations and dreams are associated with this arena. For 75 years it has been a part of Madrid’s history and one of the most popular places for visitors to the Spanish capital, irrespective of which corner of the world they come from. People get perked up on seeing the stadium.”

The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, Spain, is undergoing total transformation – complete spruce-up, a state-of-the-art look has been lent by adding a futuristic façade, retractable roof and premium facilities. The work was initially expected to last three and a half years (2019-2022). However, the COVID-19 pandemic which had engulfed Spain – along with the rest of the world – and Russian invasion of Ukraine caused significant disruption to supply chains, prompting the club to postpone the stadium’s inauguration to 2023.

‘Realmadrid’ quoted Ayuso as stating, “The Metro Station has to measure up to the standards of one of the best stadiums in the world – the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The plan is to make it a total avant-garde Station with a capacity to accommodate more passengers. It will also have facilities for persons with reduced mobility. Real Madrid has played a big role in making the City of Madrid popular world over. Their famed home stadium is a landmark of the City. The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium’s redevelopment will stand out as a reference point for sports facilities in the future.”

Added Ayuso, “The Santiago Bernabéu Metro Station spruce-up work will get underway by 2023 end. The Station will come equipped with the latest technology. Over the past year, more than 2,300,000 passengers have passed through this Station. This redevelopment is designed especially for madridistas (someone who plays for, works for, or supports Real Madrid).”
