Santos Stadium approved Image: City of Santos

Construction of the new multipurpose arena (Arena Vila Belmiro) of the Brazilian sports club Santos FC in Vila Belmiro, São Paulo, Brazil, was approved by the City Hall recently.

‘santos.sp.gov.br’ stated that the Arena Vila Belmiro nod is in sync with the Municipal, State, Federal Laws, and technical standards.

The project is expected to be completed approximately three years after construction begins including the demolition of the current structure.

The Santos FC is a Brazilian sports club based in Vila Belmiro, a bairro (a quarter or a neighborhood in the City of Santos, Brazil). It plays in the Campeonato Paulista, the State of São Paulo’s premier State league as well as the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top flight of the Brazilian football league system.

The Vila Belmiro Stadium, named after the Vila Belmiro neighborhood, officially known as the Estádio Urbano Caldeira, is an association football stadium in Santos, Brazil. Located in the Vila Belmiro neighborhood it is the home of the Santos FC.

The Santos FC plans to build a new stadium called the Arena Vila Belmiro on the site of their current home – the Estádio Urbano Caldeira (also known as the Vila Belmiro). The new stadium will have a capacity of 30,000. The project, estimated to cost R$700m (£96m/€111m/$129m), will be overseen by the WTorre conglomerate (the Brazilian conglomerate Grupo WTorre operates in the engineering and construction, real estate development, entertainment, infrastructure, and logistics sectors). The City of Santos has approved the project including plans for improved traffic infrastructure and parking.

Remarked Rogério Santos, Mayor of Santos (City in Brazil), “The Santos FC and the City of Santos enjoy great bonhomie. It is for the Santos FC that the City of Santos is known globally. By giving our nod to the above venue project we have taken a significant step forward for the club and the City which will soon boast a chic arena which will be able to stage major acts as well as concerts as presently we lack the infrastructure to host showcase events.”

‘santos.sp.gov.br’ further stated that the Santos FC President Marcelo Teixeira termed the venue nod moment “historic” and said that the club’s new home ground will undergo a 360 degree transformation.

Representing WTorre, the Director of New Projects and Business, Luiz Otávio do Amaral Alves, presented technical and operational details of the future arena – “We are estimating an investment of approximately R$700 million with a construction period of 40 months. The new stadium will have a capacity of 30,000 and will provide an enriching fan experience. We will revitalize the whole area skirting the planned venue with leveled sidewalks, relandscaped grounds, cameras integrated into the City’s security system to ensure the safety quotient is high in the venue, improved signages, bike paths, and a sturdy lighting system. We will also give import on the sustainability factor. Shops and restaurants will also come up. The planned venue will also have a devoted parking space.”
