Work to upgrade the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland (UK) in advance of next Summer’s Commonwealth Games started recently in what has been described as a “significant milestone” in preparations for Glasgow 2026.

‘BBC SPORT’ stated that the existing athletics track at the ground – which is the home of the Glasgow Warriors rugby team – is being ripped up and the temporary stands at the either end dismantled.

The 4,765-capacity Scotstoun Stadium is an athletics and rugby union stadium in Scotstoun, an area in the West End of Glasgow, Scotland (UK). The rugby team Glasgow Warriors have trained at the facility since 2009 and have played their home games here from the 2012-2013 seasons onwards.

The Glasgow Warriors are a professional rugby union side from Scotland (UK). The team plays in the United Rugby Championship league and in the European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) tournaments.

Dublin (Ireland)-based the United Rugby Championship league is an annual rugby union competition involving professional teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland (UK), South Africa, and Wales (UK).

Lausanne (Switzerland)-based the European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) is the governing body and organizer of the two major club rugby union tournaments: The European Rugby Champions Cup (an annual rugby union tournament and the top-tier competition) and the EPCR Challenge Cup (the second-tier competition for clubs based in the European leagues).

The 2026 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXIII Commonwealth Games and Glasgow 2026, is a planned multisport event scheduled to be held from July 23rd-August 2nd, 2026, in Glasgow, the largest City in Scotland (UK), for the members of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The Commonwealth of Nations, often referred to as the British Commonwealth or simply the Commonwealth, is an international association of 56 Member States the vast majority of which are former territories of the British Empire from which it developed.

‘BBC SPORT’ further stated that a new world-class surface will be laid between now and September in what is the first tranche of redevelopment with the Warriors returning to the stadium before work resumes next Spring.

The Glasgow 2026 will involve 10 sports across four venues. It is expected that more than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories will take part.

No public money will be spent on the work and the track will be gifted to the City after the conclusion of the Games which will boast the Commonwealth Mile as its signature event.

The Commonwealth Mile refers to the one-mile race which is returning to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after being absent for decades.

Pointed out Phil Batty, Glasgow 2026 Chief Executive, “There will be an electric atmosphere at Scotstoun given the caliber and scale of the athletics competition taking place there. We can’t wait to see Scotstoun come alive and the brilliant sporting moments that will take place in this incredible venue.”
