Malmö stadium replacement with Skanska Image: Skanska

Construction company Skanska has agreed a deal with the City of Malmö to develop and build Malmö’s new athletics and football stadium.

Marketscreener said the new stadium will replace the current Malmö Stadium and will be built next to the new multi-sports building that Skanska is preparing for on behalf of the City of Malmö in Sweden.

Connected to Copenhagen by the Øresund Bridge – Malmö is the third largest city in Sweden with a population of around 350,000 residents.

The 26,500-capacity Malmö Stadion, often known simply as Stadion before the construction of the new Stadion between 2007 and 2009, is a multipurpose stadium in Malmö, Sweden.

The original Malmö Stadion was constructed in 1958 for the FIFA World Cup but is deemed no longer suitable for international events. The latest project will create a new football and athletics stadium to replace the existing structure.

Skanska’s assignment also includes conducting an architectural competition to select the architect who will design the building.

The architectural competition will be carried out in early 2025 and will be followed by a design phase where the building will be designed in detail.

The agreement now concluded covers the design, demolition and costing of the construction works.

A separate contract for the actual construction phase will be concluded later. The demolition of the existing stadium will start in 2025. New construction is planned to start in 2026.

The new athletics and football stadium will be approved for international competitions in both athletics and football and is planned to have a capacity of up to 8,000 spectators.

The stadium will, among other things, accommodate a round track and sprint track, as well as an area for jumping events and an approach track for javelin. The building will also contain changing rooms with associated facilities, media areas and storage areas.

Pär Helm, district manager, Skanska Sweden, said, “It is an honor that we have been entrusted to develop and build the new athletics and football stadium in collaboration with the city of Malmö, which together with the new multisport building are central parts in the development of the stadium area.

“We look forward to working together to create the conditions for the realization of many athletics and football dreams.”

In 2022, the City Council approved a proposal for the implementation and financing of the Sports Quarter in the Northern part of the stadium area.

The new sports neighborhood will come up right in the heart of Malmö and will be connected to Pildammsparken (park in Malmö, Sweden).

The area will stretch between John Ericsson’s Road and Malmö Stadium in the North part of the stadium area. The sports district in Malmö will invest heavily in sports, education, events, and will place topmost priority to the sustainability quotient.

The sports neighborhood will hugely benefit the Malmö residents. A multifunctional hall will come up which will act as an indoor facility for football with focus on school activities, association activities and events. The multifunctional halls will also comprise offices and meeting rooms.
