Abu Dhabi golf tournament switch to November spot in 2024 Image: Yas Island

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship (UAE) will move from its traditional start-of-the-year slot to become part of a new season-climax playoff next year, as part of a major revamp of the DP World Tour.

‘msn.com’ stated that the tournament at Yas Links Abu Dhabi will switch from January to instead take place from November 7th-10th in 2024.

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is a European Tour golf tournament held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. When founded in 2006, it was one of three European Tour events to be staged in the Arabian Peninsula, but at one point was one of six.

The European Tour, currently titled as the DP World Tour for sponsorship reasons, and legally the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) European Tour or the European Tour Group, is the leading men’s professional golf tour in Europe.

‘msn.com’ further stated that it will be the first event of a new, two-tournament playoff, with the traditional season-ending event, the DP World Tour Championship at the Jumeirah Golf Estates (world-class residential golf destination), to follow a week later.

The Jumeirah Golf Estates is a luxury residential golf community located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is rated among the top 10 lifestyle estates in the world. The Jumeirah Golf Estates consists of over 1,500 villas, town houses and apartments arranged into more than a dozen distinct communities, set alongside two Greg Norman-designed 18-hole golf courses each with a different environmentally themed name – Fire and Earth. The Earth Course is the host venue for the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, the season-ending tournament of the European Tour.

Golf fans in the UAE will still have plenty of tour action to feast on at the start of 2024, with the addition of a new tournament.

Dubai Creek, which hosted the Dubai Desert Classic twice, will return to the tour when it hosts the new Dubai Invitational from January 11th-14th.

The Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club first opened in Dubai, UAE, in 1993 comprising an 18-hole par 71 championship golf course with a distinctively sail-shaped clubhouse. It was home to the first golf academy in the Middle East. The clubhouse comprises number of function rooms as well as changing facilities and a number of restaurants. It is situated in the heart of the City, on the Deira side of Dubai Creek.

The Classic is scheduled at the Emirates Golf Club the following week, before the tour heads to the Al Hamra Village, Ras al Khaimah UAE) for the Ras Al Khaimah Championship the week after that.

The Ras Al Khaimah Championship is a professional golf tournament held at the Al Hamra Golf Club in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates.

The new-look Desert Swing concludes from February 1st-4th with the new Bahrain Championship.

The new season will incorporate a minimum of 44 tournaments in 24 countries across five continents, with a total prize fund of $148.5 million – excluding the majors.

The 2024 Race to Dubai will feature three phases. Five “global swings” will take place from November 2023 to August 2024.

The second phase, from September 2024 to October 2024, is termed the ‘Back Nine’ and features nine of the tour’s “most historic”” tournaments and national opens.

The concluding two tournament play-off in Abu Dhabi and Dubai is the new finale to the season.

The tournament in the capital will feature the leading 70 players on the Race to Dubai rankings while the top 50 at the end of that tournament qualify for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

At the conclusion of the 2024 season, the leading 10 players will share a $6 million bonus pool.

Commented Keith Pelley, DP World Tour’s Chief Executive, “Our 2024 season will see our members come together to compete across a global schedule with greater opportunities and rewards than ever before. The many new and original enhancements we have introduced will guarantee drama and excitement for our fans, our broadcasters and all our stakeholders across the entire season and mean, more than ever, that every week counts on the DP World Tour.”
