The all-seater 32,000-capacity stadium Estadio Abanca-Riazor in A Coruña, Spain – home of semi-professional football club of Spain Deportivo de La Coruña – has got the technological edge with Spanish telco Telefónica fitting the venue with what it claims is the “most complete deployment of 5G coverage” in Europe as part of plans to step up the venue’s technological prowess.

Deportivo de La Coruña is a professional football club based in the City of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. They currently play in Segunda División B – Group 1, the third tier of the football league pyramid in Spain.

Telefónica, S.A. is a Spanish multinational telecommunications company headquartered in Madrid, Spain. It is one of the largest telephone operators and mobile network providers in the world. It provides fixed and mobile telephony, broadband and subscription television, operating in Europe and the Americas.

The dedicated network includes 5G coverage in the 3.5 GHz band and millimetre frequencies, ensuring bandwidth levels of several gigabits per second and ultra-low latencies.

The cutting-edge technology will allow matches to be broadcast using Edge Computing and artificial intelligence (AI), and also allow services such as KissCam and heatmaps via augmented reality (AR). The KissCam and heatmap services have been provided by video production company Cinfo.

Telefónica has deployed an Edge Computing center in A Coruńa to lodge Cinfo’s tiivii solution for broadcasting and automatic TV broadcasting. The solution’s AI algorithms allow game analysis to be performed in real time by broadcasters.

Telefónica said the technology will showcase that broadcasting a match is feasible without having to move a mobile TV unit to the place of the event.
