It has been relatively quiet for a while with regard to the developments around the new Cambuur Stadium (Netherlands). However, things are inching forward.

The ‘SC Cambuur’ stated that a meeting was held in the Cambuur Stadium premises on October 12th and a meeting was held also for the local residents in the WTC Hotel to inform them that there has been design adjustments to the restructured stadium plan.

The Cambuur Stadium is a football stadium which sits to the East side of the City of Leeuwarden, Netherlands. It is used for the home matches of SC Cambuur-Leeuwarden. The stadium is able to hold 10,500 people and opened on September 12th, 1936.

SC Cambuur-Leeuwarden, also known as SC Cambuur, or simply Cambuur, is a Dutch football club from the City of Leeuwarden formed on June 19th, 1964. They currently play in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football, after winning the 2020-2021 Eerste Divisie title.

Holding company Van Wijnen of Netherlands will take over the work of restructuring the new Cambuur Stadium, the commercial buildings along Harlingertrekweg and the McDonald’s branch in Leeuwarden – the City in Netherlands. Work is expected to start in January 2022 and matches can be held from the 2023-2024 football seasons.

The ‘SC Cambuur’ further stated that the most important message sent out by Van Wijnen, the Municipality of Leeuwarden and SC Cambuur was that a number of necessary adjustments have been made to the design of the stadium due to the rising construction costs and that the environmental permit will be applied for this month.

When making the adjustments, the opinion of the Stadium Advisory Committee consisting of supporters and sponsors of the club, and the residents of the surrounding neighborhoods were taken into consideration to the extent possible. Though the design adjustments have been made, but fans’ comfort quotient will not be compromised. The urban development plan, the development plan and the zoning plan remains unchanged.

Environmental permit

The most significant development is Van Wijnen initiating to seek the environmental permit. The environmental permit will be sought on October 22nd and work is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2022. The new Cambuur Stadium should be up and running by the summer of 2023.
