The Jackson County (Missouri, US) wants to reimagine the Truman Sports Complex after the Major League Baseball (MLB) team Kansas City Royals and the National Football League (NFL) team Kansas City Chiefs move to the new stadiums in the future.

Sports and Entertainment District

‘yahoo!news’ stated that the Interim County Executive Phil LeVota unveiled a roadmap for reusing the County’s 400-acre sports complex. The plan aims to revitalize the area into a year-round sports and entertainment district anchored by the historic Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri (US).

The Truman Sports Complex is a sports and entertainment facility in Kansas City, Missouri (US). It includes the two major league sports venues: The Arrowhead Stadium which is home to the National Football League team Kansas City Chiefs and the Kauffman Stadium which hosts the Major League Baseball team Kansas City Royals.

The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri (US). The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a Member of the American Football Conference (AFC) West Division. The team plays its home games at the Arrowhead Stadium with a New Chiefs Stadium slated to open in 2031.

The Kansas City Royals are an American professional baseball team based in Kansas City, Missouri (US). The Royals compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a Member club of the American League (AL) Central Division.

The 38,053-seat Kauffman Stadium (nicknamed ‘The K’) is a ballpark located in Kansas City, Missouri (US) and is the home of the Major League Baseball (MLB) team Kansas City Royals. It sits adjacent to the Arrowhead Stadium.

The Kansas City Chiefs plan to leave the Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri and relocate to a $3 billion new enclosed stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, scheduled to open ahead of the 2031 NFL season.

The Kansas City Royals plan to build a $1.9 billion downtown baseball stadium at the Crown Center neighborhood in Kansas City as part of a larger $3 billion mixed-use district development in partnership with Hallmark Cards (a privately held, family-owned American company based in Kansas City).

‘History-Identity-Value’

Averred LeVota, “The Arrowhead Stadium has history, identity and value. We shouldn’t wait until the facilities are empty and hundreds of acres are sitting underused to start asking what comes next. The time to start that conversation is now.”

Task Force Report

‘yahoo!news’ further stated that a report was developed by a task force that LeVota created earlier this year to decide the fate of the sports complex. At the time, LeVota said the plan could involve tearing down one or both stadiums.

Formula One Race Track

The report offers two separate concepts: One that would add housing, the hotels and the parks and the trails the other would include those features as well as a Formula One (the highest class of worldwide racing for open-wheel, single-seater formula racing cars) race track through the complex.

Film-Innovation District

The other features include making the area a transportation hub, creating a film and innovation district, adding the commercial spaces for dining and shopping, and building facilities for youth sports and the other events.

‘Not Sit Idle’

LeVota said in March, “It is my responsibility to make sure that the 400 acres of prime County-owned land is not going to sit idle but is positioned best for the people of Jackson County. This is not just about what’s leaving, it’s about what we’re going to build.”

The Truman Sports Complex was built in the early 1970s. The Arrowhead Stadium has been home to the Kansas City Chiefs since 1972 and the Kauffman Stadium opened as the Kansas City Royals Stadium in 1973.

The Chiefs and the Royals are both expected to leave their respective stadiums in the sports complex when their leases end in 2031. The Royals are working with the city to construct a new ballpark in Crown Center while the Chiefs are planning a new domed stadium in Wyandotte County (Kansas).

Major Sports and Events Venue

Rather than abandon both of the stadiums the report calls for finding ways to continue using the Arrowhead Stadium as a major sports and events venue. It notes the possibility of the stadium hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ matches in 2031, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football games and concerts.

The 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup™ is scheduled to be the 11th edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup™, the quadrennial international Women’s soccer championship contested by the national teams that represent the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will be the first to involve 48 national teams. The tournament hosts will be Mexico, the United States, Costa Rica, and Jamaica.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States and one in Canada. It also organizes the athletic programs of the colleges and helps over 500,000 college student athletes who compete annually in the college sports. The headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana (US).

Football Games

The Arrowhead Stadium hosted football games featuring the Nebraska Cornhuskers (the intercollegiate athletic teams representing the University of Nebraska–Lincoln) and the Cincinnati Bearcats (the intercollegiate athletic teams representing the University of Cincinnati) football teams this season. It is scheduled to host Nebraska’s game against Ohio’s Miami University next August.

365 Activities

The first phase of LeVota’s plan would define the Arrowhead Stadium’s long-term use and explore opportunities to keep it active year-round. The second phase would focus on redeveloping the Kauffman Stadium site and attracting private investment. The plan would then turn to developing an entertainment district with office space and housing.

The report did not provide a specific timeline.

LeVota Pitch

LeVota’s pitch comes as his term as the Interim County Executive is coming to a close. He said his plan prioritizes the County’s future after his tenure – “I may have 87 days left in this office but the Jackson County has decades ahead of it. This isn’t about announcing what will be built. It’s about making sure the Jackson County is prepared for what comes next.”
